The side effects of eating too much fiber: Moderation in all things is always the best advice, even when it comes to eating high fiber foods. Fiber is found in all plant-based foods and is an important nutrient for good health. People who have chosen a lifestyle that includes eating healthy sometimes over do it when it comes to fiber.

Balance is another important word in nutrition. A proper balance of fiber, 20 to 40 grams daily, is easily processed by the body. Keeping within this range can pay big dividends through lower cholesterol levels and a reduced risk of heart disease, and even certain types of cancer.

How can you tell when you have crossed the line into too much fiber? Your body will let you know. Intestinal gas and bloating are common side effects when adding a new, high fiber food to your diet. However, when these symptoms become painful and not within a normal range for your body, chances are you need to cut back on fiber foods. When introducing new fiber rich foods or even starting to exercise, its important to go slowly, introducing change to your body in increments.

In order to head-off a potential fiber overdose, here is a list of some fiber rich foods and the amount of fiber in each. A simple tally of the foods you eat each day will keep you within the 40 gram daily recommended maximum. Here are some examples:
Whole-wheat bread (1 slice) -1.6 (g)
Rye bread (1 slice) -1.0 (g)
White bread (1 slice) -0.6 (g)
Brown rice (cooked cup) -2.4 (g)
White rice (cooked cup) - 0.1 (g)
Spaghetti (cooked cup) - 0.8 (g)
Kidney beans (cooked cup) - 5.8 (g)
Lima beans (cooked cup) - 4.9 (g)
Potato (baked- medium) - 3.8 (g)
Corn (1/2 cup) - 3.9 (g)
Spinach (1/2 cup) - 2.0 (g)
Strawberries (3/4 cup) - 2.0 (g)
Banana (medium) - 2.0 (g)
Apple (with skin/medium) - 2.6 (g)
Orange (small) - 1.2 (g)

Excessive fiber consumption, in the 60-70 gram amounts daily, can cause potential harm to your body. In addition to gas and bloating, this level of consumption can cause dehydration. Large amounts of fiber also require large amounts of fluids. As fiber intake is increased, so must fluids be increased. If not, stools can become hard and difficult to pass resulting in hemorrhoids.

Fiber naturally speeds the movement of foods through the digestive track. Too much fiber can prohibit iron from being absorbed early during digestion, and may limit the chances for the absorption of calcium and other nutrients too.

Too much fiber can also make the body feel "full", and trick it into thinking enough nutrients have been consumed. This can result in loss of energy and can lead to other health problems if fiber levels are not reduced to a normal range.

The human body will always seek balance. The side effects of eating too much fiber offer clear signs that, when respected, can point us back into the direction of a more balanced and healthy fiber intake.

The alternative to white rice is whole grain brown rice.( I am not talking about ofada rice, although ofada is also nutritious). The nutritional value is simply amazing but brown rice isnt 4 everyone. Only for health conscious people or those who wish to prevent/control health conditions like diabetes, hypertension, heart-related diseases, weight loss, etc
