It is a common knowledge that some highly placed Nigerians divert subsidized fuel away from Nigeria to some neighbouring African countries and who knows if not beyond.
While some say subsidy should stop but they failed to understand why subsidy was introduced in the first place.
Industries especially foreign funded ones tend to establish in countries where energy is cheap. Nigeria doesn't have a steady power supply and the only advantage we may have over some neighbouring countries is cheap energy. Ghana has almost a steady power supply more than Nigeria. An international company will prefer Ghana to Nigeria ordinarily but with cheap energy in Nigeria may swing the pendulum of advantage to Nigeria.
Cheap energy will boost local manufacturing and industry and factory growth. This was what necessitated the idea of subsidizing fuel to encourage international companies to have Nigeria as their investment destination.
Trust Nigerians! We have criminals who always have away of turning public good to their advantages unduly. Since energy is not subsidized in some other neighboring African countries some high placed Nigerians have found way of diverting government paid fuel away from Nigeria and cashing out in billions yearly.
In some quarters those who declare volumes consume also balloon the figures. They give bogus figures. That government ends up paying for what wasn't consumed.
This must stop and it is easy to stop.
The way forward to stop diversion. One simple way to stop diversion is to talk to the foreign refineries we import from to taint Nigerian fuel in a peculiar colour.
We could choose green. Petrol when produced is colourless. For identify it is tainted pink.
Nigeria out of the doctrine of necessity can request a special colour.
This may not stop diversion however Nigerians can know which places are their fuel diverted to and identify those responsible.
