The premier of the Gauteng province in South Africa, Panyaza Lesufi, says the provincial government will provide slain hip-hop artist Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes with a gravesite at Heroes Acre Cemetery in the capital, Pretoria.

Lesufi had requested a provincial state funeral for the slain rapper and the Presidency rejected it.

AKA and his friend Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane were gunned down outside a restaurant on Florida Road, Durban, on Friday night, 10 February.

Lesufi committed that the provincial government would honour the late musician by providing law enforcement, a gravesite at Heroes Acre Cemetery and flag draping of his casket.

He said they feel that a person of AKA’s stature must receive some form of honour, and they also want to clarify that it is not a financial contribution.

“We will drape the coffin and provide a gravesite at Heroes Acre Cemetery for the burial. We will ensure that his funeral is befitting,” he said.

AKA’s memorial service will be held at the Sandton Convention Centre on Friday, 17 February while his private funeral service will be on Saturday, 18 February.

In a statement, the Forbes family acknowledged the outpouring of love they received over the past few days.

“Kiernan wasn’t just loved by us as a family but by the nation, as we’ve seen from loved ones, friends, industry colleagues, media tributes, and the Megacy. It is our wish to celebrate the life of giving with those he touched and impacted through his gift of music. The memorial will therefore be open to the public as well as streamed online.” the family said.

The Heroes' Acre is a permanently closed military section of Church Street Cemetery in Pretoria, South Africa.

It was established in 1867, and contains the graves of renowned citizens and public figures. It is the burial place of a number of historical figures including Andries Pretorius, Paul Kruger and Hendrik Verwoerd.

The Heroes' Acre is listed as a heritage site.
