2023 election: 400,000 security personnel to be deployed nationwide – IGP

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alkali Baba Usman, said over 400,000 security personnel would be deployed for the smooth conduct of the general elections across the country.

The IGP made the disclosure yesterday at the 66th Ministerial Media Briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, yesterday.

He said out of this number, the police would provide over 300,000 personnel, while the rest would be sourced from complementary security agencies in the country.

While listing fuel scarcity and cash crunch as threats against the conduct of the elections, Baba assured that the situation will stabilise before the commencement of the exercise.

“We are very sure the situation of cash and petrol will stabilise before the conduct of the election,” he stated.

Reports gathered that, He further informed that an intelligence unit has been put in place to track and apprehend those who may engage in vote buying and those who may want to disrupt the exercise.

He said: “In aid of our efficient and informed human operational and logistics deployment plan, we have undertaken an election security threat analysis, which identifies and prioritised possible threats to the electoral process, in terms of location and specific personalities and groups across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“The force is also leveraging on the outcome of similar exercises undertaken and shared with us by the Department of State Services and civil society organisations, particularly CLEEN Foundation. The operational plan of the Force is a product of these initiatives.

“From INEC records, there exists 176,846 polling units in 8,809 wards of the 36 states of the federation and FCT, where the elections will be conducted. The Nigeria Police, with the support of other security agencies, has perfected plans to deploy, in a coordinated and collaborative manner, to cover all these locations.

“The deployment will cover the National Collation Centre in Abuja, as well as other collation centres across states of the federation, the FCT and the 774 local areas of the federation. In view of the above, Nigeria police will deploy 310,973 personnel for the elections security operations.

This will comprise the conventional policemen, the mobile policemen, the special counterterrorism unit, the special forces, intelligence response team and other sections of the police.

“The manpower requirement for this exercise will be complemented by the military and other security agencies. In this regard, aside from the military and the DSS, other security agencies will contribute a total of 93,495 personnel for the election security operations.

“These include the Nigrian Security and Civil Defence, who will deploy, through the police, 151,000 personnel; the Federal Road Safety Corps, 21,000; Nigerian Correctional Service, 11,336; the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, 9,447; Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, 350, totalling 404,106 to police the elections.

“With this layout, a minimum of, at least, two personnel, drawn from the above agencies, will be jointly deployed to man each of the polling units across the country, while the armed personnel will secure the public space, INEC facilities, vulnerable locations, border areas, as well as undertake armed escort duties for INEC personnel, materials and local and international observers.

“We, also, expect the military to complement this situation by providing armed protection to critical national assets, ensuring that the enforcement of movements are curtailed through the blocking of exit points and entry points to various states, local governments and so forth.”

On specific plans to stop those who may disrupt the exercise as well as deter vote buyers, Baba disclosed that a unique technical intelligence assets and special intelligence unit of the police, working with other security agencies and INEC, are in place to track and apprehend those who may plan to disrupt the exercise or intimidate vote buyers.

He said: “As part of efforts to address the menace of votes selling and buying, a special intelligence unit of the force has been constituted to clandestinely monitor the trend and work with EFCC, ICPC and INEC in identifying the network that may be involved in this illegality and apprehend them where possible.

“In addition, the unique technical intelligence assets of the force are also being deployed towards identifying adverse elements that may be planning to disrupt the process.

“Through this initiative, such elements will be identified real time, geo-located, isolated, arrested and brought to justice.”

No vote buying please
Vote wisely
Put on your conscience

We all know what we have been through for 8 eight years

We should not let the world mock us

If because of tribalism and religion we repeat the same thing

Then whenever I hear bad news and hardship from Nigerians am gonna be celebrating it and be happy

And the worse part of it all is that after this election and we repeat our mistakes then I'm gonna be asking questions about the tribe of the person I intend to render help to...
Because I'm aware about the tribe that is about to spoil this redemption for Nigeria right about now

Oftentimes, policemen don't bear firearms during elections.

So, please we need armed-to-teeth soldiers and APCs deployed and should be in constant patrol on Saturday across the 36 states and the FCT.

If anyone tries to run away with the ballot box, please shoot at sight! grin

How many police we get?
Online election is still the best... Safe, easy and cheap.
But we must first be sure MTN, Airtel, and Glo won't sabotage the election by switching off the network in some locality where their preferred candidate might lose.

; grin In another news, El Rufai too rejects security agencies deployed to Kaduna during election.

The accidental civil servant insists he has enough old notes to suppress any form of violence during election.

All old note is still in use for vote buying in Kaduna till after election.

Good... At least, half of this should be deployed to Lagos to checkmate MC Oluomo and his boys.

Meanwhile....
Why I Don't Support Tinubu for President of Nigeria

Personal reason: I don't like the choice of his Vice, he strikes me as the true face of Bokoharam.

Health reason: He is obviously struggling with his health and memories. It is not his fault that he is old, but it is his fault that he has refused to rest. I won't push him to an office that his health and age will not carry. He will end up ruling by proxy, which is not good for a country like Nigeria.

Reason based on justice: GEJ and his party were voted out of office based on incompetence, it is only fair that with the woeful failure of APC that has superseded that of PDP, the party should not be rewarded with another tenure.

Based on morals: Tinubu has consistently lied. He lied about his age, his education, and his family. They even hired people to act as bishops and priests in one of their unveiling programs. I do not trust anything he is promising. Even more, is the fact that he is an alleged drug lord and he has not denied his dealings with illegal drugs. My moral conscience won't allow me to consider him.

Religion: He is Muslim, his Vice is a Muslim and they both want to take over from a Muslim. In a country like ours with about 50% Christians, they are simply saying that the North has no Christians. And to make it more obvious, El Rufia in one of his recent interviews described the northern Christians as an "enclave".

Issue base: His major drive to be president is based on the fact that he considers the presidency as his turn (emi lo kan). Even on issues he has spoken about, none is coherent. And even if you think anyone is coherent, they don't seem to have emanated from him.

Note: I have the right to my opinion on the candidates.
This is my personal opinion.

God bless Buhari, all his Nairaland zombies are now against him because of cashless policy.
A clear indication these guys were on payroll, they never cared about the progress of Nigeria.

I lost words when I saw Sarki comments this morning, madridguy and vulture griller are all on heat... It's obvious these were enemies of Nigeria.

Buhari! I've never been your fan, but for what you did.... Kudus, this should be one your greatest legacy.

Obi supporters please start saving for celebration because as it stands... Only God can stop Obi's victory.

Your comment suggests that you want to snatch the ballot box and run away. Before that, make sure you say your last prayers because you aren't coming back alive 😁

On a serious note, soldiers don't come close to polling units. They just patrol in surrounding areas to make sure there's law and order. Unarmed policemen and paramilitary forces stay at the polling units. So, there's no way stray bullets will drop on people at the PUs because soldiers are faraway from there.
