President Joe Biden visited Kyiv on Monday for the first time since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine almost a year ago, demonstrating in dramatic personal fashion his commitment to the country and its struggle as the war enters an uncertain new phase.

Biden arrived in Kyiv at 8 a.m. local time, according to reporters traveling with him inside Ukraine, and was greeted by the US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink. His motorcade arrived to the Mariinsky Palace just after 8:30 a.m. local time. He was greeted at the entrance by Zelensky and his wife, Olena Zelenska.

“Thank you for coming,” Zelensky said, shaking Biden’s hand.

“More importantly, how are the children?” Biden asked, adding: “It’s amazing to see you.”

In joint remarks alongside Zelensky, Biden said announced a half-billion dollars in assistance to Ukraine, saying the package would include more military equipment, including artillery ammunition, more javelins and Howitzers.

In remarks, Biden spoke about the resilience of the Ukrainian resistance as the war enters its second year.

“One year later, Kyiv stands. And Ukraine stands. Democracy stands,” Biden said.

Zelensky added that he and Biden spoke about “long range weapons and the weapons that may still be supplied to Ukraine even though it wasn’t supplied before.”

Biden’s visit comes at a critical moment in the 12-month conflict, with Russia preparing for an expected spring offensive and Ukraine hoping to soon retake territory. The United States and other western nations have been rushing arms, tanks and ammunition to Ukraine in the hopes of changing the trajectory of the war.

By visiting in person, Biden is offering a singular image of American support for Zelensky, who has spent the past year attempting to rally the world behind his home nation and appealing for greater levels of assistance. During their meeting, Biden laid out his rationale for visiting the Ukrainian capital as the war enters a second year.

“I thought it was critical that there not be any doubt, none whatsoever, about US support for Ukraine in the war,” Biden said.

“The Ukrainian people have stepped up in a way that few people ever have in the past,” he added.

Biden emphasized there was broad, bipartisan support in Washington for the Ukrainian cause.

“For all the disagreement we have in our Congress on some issues, there is significant agreement on support for Ukraine,” he said.

“It’s not just about freedom in Ukraine. … It’s about freedom of democracy at large,” he said.

Zelensky himself traveled to Washington in December to meet Biden in the Oval Office and speak to a joint session of Congress – his first trip outside Ukraine since the war began.

The Ukrainian leader invited Biden to visit Kyiv months ago, saying he believed it was important for the US leader to see the situation up close.

You got a lot wrong on Syria though. The Syrian war is more complex than you think. Both Assad, the US, Russia, YPG and YPG allied groups are against ISIS and have all fought ISIS. The US has repeatedly said they were not involved in the Syrian civil war however both Assad and Turkey were not happy that the US used YPG to fight ISIS because they regard YPG and PKK as terrorists. The US however used them because they were more willing and the Syrian army was controlled by Russia. Assad however had no problem with the US support against ISIS.

Assad did not call on Russia because of ISIS but because of YPG/PKK. Initially the US wanted to back YPG rebels officially against Assad but backtracked as Assad drastically drew Russia into the war, so the US will have to risk a world war. What made Turkey go against the YPG/Kurds was because they fell out with the Turkish leadership and even tried to overthrow Erdogan in 2017. However the YPG are not Islamic fighters and hate ISIS more than anyone else in that region. That's why the US loves them so much that they fell out with Turkey and Syria because of them. ISIS was wiped out in Syria practically because of these guys.
