13 Most Important Safety Guidelines for Everyone During Elections

Election seasons can be some of the most politically charged and tumultuous times of the year.

With Nigeria’s general elections fast approaching in 2023, it’s natural to be concerned about your safety.

History has shown that election periods are often times of violence and unrest. In light of this, here are some essential tips to ensure a safe and secure electoral process before, during and after the polls for you and your family.

1. Ensure You have Enough Food Supplies.

To ensure that you have enough supplies during election season, it is important to acquire non-perishable and dry goods at quick-service retailers.

Non-perishable foods such as canned or satchet vegetables, beans, rice, grains, nuts, seeds and snack items will allow you to establish an emergency food stash for your family.

Setting up an emergency stockpile of food and water is the first step to staying safe during election season.

2. Ensure You Return Home Before Nightfall.

Brutal attacks are sadly quite common during politically charged seasons, so be sure to avoid potential dangers at all costs.

To reduce risk, make sure to complete all errands and activities before dark. It is recommended that you return home by sundown., avoiding any meetings, programs, or events that may cause a delay in returning home.

Additionally, be aware of any curfews implemented in your area as staying out too late could result in serious consequences.

3. Stay Away from Areas Prone to Violence during Elections.

Make sure to stay away from areas with a history of political violence and unrest when planning your activities for election season. This can include public demonstrations, rallies and protests, and any large gatherings of people.

Keep in mind that it is often difficult to predict where and when violence may start – even if the locale seems safe at first. If you do choose to attend one of these events, avoid standing near high-tension areas, or too close to heated arguments.

4. Exercise Caution When Discussing Politics or Your Voting Intentions With Strangers or Acquaintances Publicly.

With the election season nearing and emotions running high, it can be difficult to avoid some political conversations. To stay safe during this time of heightened stress, make sure you avoid getting into any form of political arguments publicly.

Even if you think your opponent’s opinions are misguided, public arguments might lead to physical confrontations or breaking and entering.

Make sure to stay cool-headed and walk away from heated conversations whenever possible.
