FAKE NEWS ALERT: INEC did not extend voting period in 16 states

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has not extended the period of voting in 16 states.

A statement stating that INEC has extended the voting period for the presidential and national assembly elections is presently circulating on WhatsApp.

According to the statement, INEC made the decision to extend the election to Sunday, February 26, due to violence experienced in some areas, and the late arrival of election materials in other locations.

The statement identified affected states as Lagos (Surulere, Ikate, Okota, Eti-Osa, Kosofe and Oshodi), FCT, Ebonyi, Rivers, Imo, Anambra, Kano and Edo.

Others are Delta, Kogi, Bayelsa, Enugu, Sokoto, Taraba, Abia, and, Ekiti.

“Voting in the affected areas will resume by 8 am till 12 pm on the 26th February 2023,” the statement reads.

“Therefore, it advised that staff and stakeholders continue to adhere to all Government/INEC directives and security advisories concerning this election.

“We would continue to monitor the situation and provide timely situation reports across the country.”

But when TheCable contacted Festus Okoye, INEC’s national commissioner and chairman of the information and voter education committee, he said the message is “fake”.

Also, Rotimi Oyekanmi, INEC spokesperson, in a post on Twitter, asked Nigerian to disregard the message.

“INEC did not extend the voting period in 16 States. The story below is fake and should be disregarded,” he said.

“An extension of time was granted to voters in areas where PUs did not open at 8.30 am. Voters on the queue before 2.30 pm are then allowed beyond the 2.30 pm stoppage time.”

While INEC has debunked the news of extension in 16 states, it did earlier suspend elections in 141 polling units in Bayelsa state till Sunday morning.

Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, said the exercise was postponed in the affected polling units because the voting process was disrupted.

All because your Candidate didn't win or what? I didn't see the other party wish people death even after losing polling units.. Your toxicity Is on a different level!

It's pretty normal to lose, or were you expecting him to win the whole state in Nigeria!
You people were celebrating the polling unit you won and no one insulted you but now it's rigging when it comes to other candidates winning!
Your hypocrisy is glaring.

I don't trust INEC again, INEC will set this country on fire.
From all indications, Obi is winning but INEC choose to do otherwise.

They should also include some polling unit in Nsuka in Enugu state, many could not vote because of activities of some criminals that were shooting sporadically yesterday ..... Congrats in advance to PO and all the Nigeria youths for the pending victory.

There was no voting in some highly populated areas of Abuja like Lugbe and it will only be fair if elections are conducted in such places because INEC failed to bring sufficient voting materials which led to anger and disruption of the process

I'm seeing different result sheet being uploaded from Rivers State showing LP and PDP with zero votes, but APC scoring 130, 93 etc.

This is pure fraud of the highest order.

Even a one year old will tell you how popular Peter Obi is in Rivers State for him not to even score a single vote in any poling unit.

If you enter remote parts of Rivers State, Tinubu is basically unknown for him to even get anything reasonable from there.

Even Lagos, Tinubu's stronghold no cook result like this.

This is pure fraud, plain and simple...... And if you support this, then you are one of the problems we have in this country.

INEC needs to explain how results weren't uploaded immediately after coalition from each poling unit and why they decided to do it through the back door.

Rivers State is fully Obidient, LP should take this to court, let Wike come and explain those miracle figures.

This is the worst election ever in the history of Nigeria. INEC were not ready and not organise with their deceitful motive of rigging for a particular political party. The president deceived us with having many securities in place to protect citizen but all was camouflage as voters were harassed and humiliated. It will be unfair and inhuman if a particular party without structure win and INEC fail to announce them winners. They should all be aware that the world is watching…

DELIVER US, O GOD ALMIGHTY

Like in a trance, I saw heavy manipulations going on in several places across the country Nigeria since yesterday. What we would have as election results might have been altered. I did not see clearly the candidate or party behind the alleged manipulations. Votes from cities and popular places may not be tampered with but those from remote places. How it is being done I did not understand.
God of Heaven and Earth, we have done our parts at the polls. We know you can use anyone of the presidential candidates to deliver Nigeria. Look not on our sins, O Lord but on the fate and the faith of the faithfuls.
Like the Israelites of old, many prefer the old Egypt than the Promised Land. Though we might not have seen clearly what awaits us, we know that your choice is the best.
Deal with the evil ones, we pray you Lord, as you dealt with Pharaoh and his Chariots (Exodus 14). Respond to our accusers as you did for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Daniel 3: 16 – 28). Grant us peace, with the confidence that whatever the result of the 2023 general election in Nigeria is with your divine permission (John 19:11).
May your will be done, O Lord. And, not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth's sake (Psalm 115).
Amen.

INEC has been a huge disappointment this election year!

After over 20 years of conducting elections, they are still this shoddy, incompetent and corrupt!

I literally spent the entire day at the polling unit yesterday! Accreditation didn't start until 8pm!... This is unheard of!
