Landlord Sold His House Within 11 Months Of My Tenancy by Tophqinfo(m): 7:18am On Mar 03, 2023
My name is Ige. I rented an apartment dated 1st January last year 2022. Just before last Christmas 2022, Landlord summoned me to his Parlor and verbally informed me that he has sold half plot from his 900sqm land space and My rented apartment falls on the sold half plot. He then said that because I am relatively new using my 1st year, he would complete a foundation level structure in the compound by March and on completion , if I like it, I pay him for the rent and will move in there with my family . I said no problem.

Today he just informed me that high cost of building materials has handicapped him financially and as a result, the foundation level building is stuck at roofing level and to my chagrin, he said the new buyer insists that we vacate the compound latest this March ending.

What is my best take my people according to the law.

Pay for the completion of the building and it should be deducted from your subsequent rentage. Leave wahala alone. Stop wielding the sword over anything Nigerians

You have withheld certain key information. Your tenancy started Jan 1, 2022 but you have not stated when it ends.

If you are an annual tenant, your rent has expired. And you owe your landlord 2 month's rent by now. Pay him pls.

Having informed you that he has sold his property and an offer to build a new apartment which you can rent, he is a good human being. Bear in mind that renting the new apartment to you is optional and can go to any tenant.

Cost of construction is high, so why upfront a couple of years rent so he can finish the house or move out if you don't accept.

If you have financial challenges then it's understandable that you need a place to live, but you are not under any contract with the new owner so a court order can put you out after 2 eviction notices and your house hold items kept at court storage at an incremental cost.
