This makes no sense.

If Yorubas settled in Lagos in droves more than anyone else from the 1450s, as the article says, then it IS Yorubaland.

Just about everyone living in West Africa today is descended from people who migrated from somewhere else.

This Oba Akiolu needs to go and study the history of the sub-region.

By his argument, Onitsha is not actually Igboland, but Edoland.

According to Encyclopedia Britannica:

''Founded by adventurers from Benin (nearby, to the west) in the early 17th century, Onitsha grew to become the political and trading centre of the small Igbo (Ibo) kingdom of Onitsha. Its monarchical system (rare among the Igbo people) was patterned after that of Benin.''

https://www.britannica.com/place/Onitsha-Nigeria

Onitsha was not conquered land, the people of Obosi and other neighboring town gave descendants of Onitsha their land to settle.

However Eko or Lagos is conquered territory of bini kingdom. Yorubas that later migrated there later wete people that escaped from Yoruba civil wars that led to fall of Oyo empire and formation of Ibadan.

History is good judge of men

Ọbá Akiolu is authority and he is very right to what he said.

Do you know history of Lagos more than the Oba of Lagos ? Why should your opinion on the subject take precedence.
Akiolu has said it repeatedly that he did not say that Lagos is not Yorubaland.
Awori people came from Ile Ife,cradle of Yorubaland.
What does Awori mean in Bini language, sir? cheesy

Who did the Bini conquer in Lagos?
Have you ever heard a Bini sell land in Lagos before?
Why cant they sell land if they own it?

Yoruba is the majority population but they’re not the ORIGINAL population . That’s why the Oba said it should not be a part Yorubaland.

It wasn’t me who said that. It was the Oba of Lagos.

the Binis founded the whole Yoruba land.

The Oba of Lagos is WRONG.

Is Onitsha is not Igboland since Edo people were the ORIGINAL population?

According to Encyclopedia Britannica:

''Founded by adventurers from Benin (nearby, to the west) in the early 17th century, Onitsha grew to become the political and trading centre of the small Igbo (Ibo) kingdom of Onitsha. Its monarchical system (rare among the Igbo people) was patterned after that of Benin.''

Edo people are not the initial settlers rather eze chime and descendants on igbo land close to the river bank, thats why they were sorrounded by igbos. Modern day onitsha north and south is a fusion of igbo villages sorrounding the original onitsha ado.

Yorubaland is far older than Benin

Do you know why Yorubas Call the Benin the Ados?

Because the. first Igodomigodo which Oranmiyan later renamed as Ile Ibinu at it's present location was in the Ado Ekiti Area and Populated by Ado People

The first Ogiso ruler was from Ile Ife and it was the 3rd Ogiso that moved Igodimigodo to its present Area

The founders of Benin then known as Igodomigodo were the Ancient Ancestors of today's Ado Ekiti People and that happened even before Oduduwa became king of Ile Ife

The Oduduwa dynasty was the second dynasty of Kings in Yorubaland
The first dynasty of Kings were the Ugbo Obatala kings
and Ife Historians inform us that 77 Obatala kings had ruled before Oduduwa became king of Ile Ife
They gave Igodomigodo which later became Benin its first Ogiso ruler

Goodbye

The Binis settled in Lagos just like Aworis and Eguns in Badagry, we know that.. but modern day Lagos State has parts of Ogun state merged with it. Most parts of Mainland were ceded to Lagos state so Lagos can have more lands and L.G.As.. Everyone knows Lagos used to be a slave coast for Portugese with some of the Obas selling their own people into slavery in return for wealth and power. The Vivour-Rhodes, Bode George are returnee slaves from Portugal.

It's wrong to say Lagos is owned by Binis only when Yoruba sub-group Aworis are there, likewise the Egun people. However you choose to see it, Lagos is still part of Yoruba lands cos there are more Yorubas than Binis. Yoruba and the Binis are related with similar traditions.

Benin itself was founded by Ancient Ado Ekiti People that is why the Yorubas still call them the Ados till today
and their first Ogiso was from Ile Ife sent to them by the Obatala dynasty of Kings at Ile Ife and that was why when they later needed a king it was to the same Ile Ife they returned to for a king

It was the 3rd Ogiso that moved Benin then known as Igodomigodo from the Ado Ekiti Area to it's present Area because of War

This was well before even Oduduwa became king of Ile Ife and it was he who later sent them Oranmiyan to replace the last Ogiso

Benin people and Yorubas blend well so there is possibility they are of ancient Yoruba stock.

Who do ipob think they are ?

Lagos is Aworiland

Lagos is 100% Yorubaland

The Awori are 100% Yorubas and from Ife Originally

On the day the British Colonial Government first landed in Lagos in 1851 Oyo controlled Badagry Area including Seme Which they had taken from the king of Dahomey along with Porto Novo (Ajase) in War .

The Oyos had initially also taken Allada ,Ouidah and Cotonou at the time but the King of Dahomey had managed to take them back while the Oyo were very busy fighting the Power drunk Afonja and the Fulani at Ilorin

The Oyos had fought Dahomey as Allies of the Eguns
aare oona kakanfo oyabi had led the Oyo Army

The Abeokuta Egba Army Controlled all of Lagos Mainland including Iddo Island and all the Territory from there to Abeokuta Which they had won in the Ota War of 1842 in Which the Oyos of Ibadan fought as Allies of Oba Kosoko and the Awori and received such a heavy defeat at the hands of the Egbas that the Ibadan Army had to be smuggled back home.

The whole Episode almost led to the downfall of Basorun Oluyole back at Ibadan

The Ijebu Army Controlled Everything East and North of Lekki including Victoria Island

All Oba Kosoko Controlled was the Slave market and Port of Isale Eko on Lagos Island, Even Ikoyi belonged to the Onikoyi who was Awori Yoruba with Oyo roots

Again if you hear that Yorubas spent 100 years fighting themselves till 1878,

Just know that the Egba, Ijebu and Oyo Which included Ibadan were also fighting for Control of the Coast of Lagos

Control of the Coast of Lagos meant Titanic Wealth. but unfortunately much of that was from the Slave trade

The Lagos territory Controlled by the Egbas , Oyo and Oba Kosoko belonged to the Awori People who were the most Peaceful and accommodating of all Yoruba Clans

Eko is Yoruba short for Ereko which means field and for Confirmation Ereko Market where the Egbas and Ijebu traded is still on Lagos Island today

Also Eko Ende in Osun State was one of the Locations of the Jalumi War of 1878

The Awori have inhabited Lagos since the 13th Century when they migrated from Ile Ife led by Olofin Ogunfuminire who was a great grandson of Oduduwa and a nephew of Oranmiyan who headed to Benin around the same period

The Land on Which Isale Eko of the Oba of Lagos is located belongs to the Awori Yoruba Aromire family till today

Aromire was one of the Sons of Olofin Ogunfuminire

The Otun Ekiti People migrated from Lagos in the 15 th Century and share the same ancestry with the Awori of Lagos

It was the returnee Egba Slaves who had been Converted to Christianity at Sierra Leone Bishop Ajayi Crowther included that asked the British Queen Victoria to invade Oba Kosoko’s Lagos in order to finally end the Evil Slave trade

Bishop Ajayi Crowther had met with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert her Husband at Windsor Castle over the Issue of how to finally end the Slave Trade in Lagos on 18th November 1851 and the Royal British Navy Bombarded Lagos one month Later on 26th of December 1851.

Bishop Ajayi Crowther who was originally from Osogun near Oyo had himself at age 13 been sold to a Portuguese Slave Trader at Lagos for a bottle of Wine and some Tobacco leaves

Capt Labulo Davies who later married Queen Victoria’s adopted Daughter Sarah Bonnetta (Aina) originally from Ilaro , was on the British ship that Bombarded Oba Kosoko’s Lagos in 1951 and Oba Akitoye whom the British had restored to the Throne of Lagos had first met the British Missionaries at Abeokuta while he was exiled there as Abeokuta was also Oba Akitoyes Owu mother’s Hometown he had promised. to end the Evil Slave Trade if the British helped to restore him to his Throne which his nephew Oba Kosoko had Usurped with the help of some local and Portuguese Slave traders after Oba Akintoye had driven the Portuguese Slave Traders out of Lagos 6 years earlier

Slave Trading was Oba Kosoko’s Business and his Slave Market was at Ereko Market of Isale Eko on Lagos Island where he also sold European made Goods

Ok listen to the Oba of Lagos Himself

This wasn't what was said. 2. Even if such was said, it's wrong by all historical accounts 3. Edo/Benin Royal bloodline and kingship was started by a Yoruba prince called Oronmiyan who came from Ife. This means all of Edo royal line in Yoruba. So the shared Yoruba origins can make them connected. This is why Edo kings used to be buried in Yorubaland. 4. Aworis are the oldest inhabitants of Lagos and they're Yoruba people. Then next are the Ijebus, Egba... Who are also.... Yoruba people. Last but not the least, come and Chase Yoruba people out of Lagos then na, oh, you can't... you can only make propaganda from your phone... I thought as much.

You will notice that Benin is far from Lagos so what would Benin be looking for in the Lagos Area in the first place?

The Ijebu Remo and the Benin People were very close relatives because Oranmiyan the first Oba of Benin and the first king of Ikorodu had the same mother

Whenever Oranmiyan went to War they went together and when Oranmiyan went to Benin the first Oba of Ikorodu went to Benin with.Oranmiyan

It was in his return that he founded Ikorodu and when the Ijebu Remo people of Ikorodu were having problems with the Awori cousins and neighbours their brothers from Benin would turn up to defend them that continued until a disagreement happened between the Ijebu Remo People and the Benin People to the extent that the Remos ended up driving the Benin from Lagos

It was the Remos that brought the Benin to Lagos Area and it was them.again that drove them out

A Remnant remained at Isale Eko on Lagos Island and the Remos left them their as an act of Mercy since the only place they could escape to was the Bottom of the Atlantic ocean

The Ijebu of Lagos State are mainly Ijebu Remo People

That was why it was from Ijebu that the Itsekiri People Migrated to Warri

Another takeaway from this article is the evidence of the might and level of development of the ancient Benin Kingdom. I read somewhere that before these current line of Obas of Benin came into existence around 1100 AD , there were about 30 Ogiso kings already.
If you calculate an average age of 70 (plus or minus 10 years) for each king . That’s between 1800 to 2100 years BEFORE 1100AD.
Therefore we’re looking at around 1000 BC. The Roman Republic wasn’t even in existence then .

Unfortunately these things are not taught in detail in our schools as the curriculum is woefully inept and inadequate. Our school curriculum tries to foster an incomplete sense of national unity at the expense of our actual nationhood

The first Oba of Lagos was a prince of the Bini empire known as Prince Ado. Interestingly, the people of Onitsha take their heritage from the Bini empire, and the actual name of Onitsha is Onicha-Ado!
