If we are being honest... Tertiary education is currently overrated in Nigeria and across the globe! There are 18 to 21 year old Waec holders with more tech skills than Masters and PhD holders, and more attractive to proper employers too! Matter of fact, every successful and balling virtual freelancer will tell you no foreign boss is interested in your education other than your ability to communicate with him effectively in good grammar and what skills relevant to his project you possess! In case you don't yet know, let me tell you in no uncertain terms.... We are no longer in the age of academic qualifications! We are now in the age of Skill Acquisition! A University degree is purely academic and serves only as a decoration for your brain and walls. 11 Likes 3 Shares |

IamANigerianMan:You can’t even ffck a lecturer to get a 2nd class, how much more first class... You think first class is one easy result? The highest your pussi would do for you is to be letting you scale thru carry over, that’s all.. First class, 2nd class are for brilliant students only.. 16 Likes 4 Shares |

I stopped reading when I deduced your theme. Most of your points are not cogent reasons to castigate 2.1 and esteem 2.2 Again, what is the name of the Foreign University you did the after the graduate study and in which Country. Let's just verify something. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Sadly, you cant get admission into some universities abroad about the coveted 2-1. I remember telling a family friend that she should work hard to get a 2-1. Even with that, she had lots of rejections from Canadian Universities, but she finally got into UK. Another mate of mine got a 1st class from OAU. He got a FULL Masters scholarship to study in Canada. Another former classmate got a first class in Pharmacy in UI, and got a full PhD scholarship to the United States. While it is possible that a 3rd class student might become successful, because he or she is very motivated to succeed giving the situation, it is wrong to assume that getting better grades are overrated. It is really a matter of perception, and perception can take you far in life. If I could advice someone to be an expert with a 2-2, or study to pass with a first class...I will advice the later. You can grow into being an expert, but those 2-2 can block many doors and make the expertise become useless. VBCampaign: 10 Likes |

Having a second class upper is certainly better than a second class lower. Apart from the job invites it gets you, it also gives you competitive advantage in scholarship and economic opportunities. 8 Likes |

People cant proudly be be flouting their degrees anymore cos education in Nigeria is so useless. My friend's brother is in 300L in a university in Europe and he's been on an excursion to America twice , Solicon Valley and another Tech destination. Meanwhile, lecturers went on strike for not allowing Nigerian students experience this and lecturers couldn't update themselves anymore on research works overseas which they could have come back home.to impart and some illiterate youths were busy condemning that? If you have the opportunity to japa and further your studies overseas, don't hesitate to do that. I know of a guy who had a good grade in an engineering course in Nigeria and left for Germany to start from 100L over there, now he's in 300L. He said he just realised he wasted 5 years in Nigeria doing nothing. He's been in Canada once and another EU country from school on excursions. Sadly, those politicians the illiterates are running after have their children schooling overseas. They'd end up coming back becoming their ruler. 2 Likes |

I believe in quality education to the core. I also believe anyone aspiring to attend Nigerian university should just not bother and anyone in a Nigerian i University should just complete with whatever grade and resume immediately with NURTW.At least you’ll start wrestling N126Billion on the steady with purpose. Bad as e bad N3M-N10M minimum will drop for your side if you know what you are doing. Better than spreading copies of CV around for 5years.

It's interesting that while the OP gave anecdotal evidence, your evidence is much weaker because it is based on your own theory. You told us what you think and not at all what you have observed. That doesn't cut it Tell us how many years ago you graduated and how many of your first class and Second class upper classmates are doing well compared to those who got lower grades? Mind you, I expect you must have graduated at least 10yrs ago to be able to give us a robust observation with your own class. If only you knew that the companies that insist on minimum 2-1 do not even employ 0.1% of the total graduates, you might understand why what the OP stated is closer to the truth. chinchum: |

This is simply a consolation post, pandering to the narrative of "first classes and 2-1's are not all that, etc etc" The fact that our education system is crap is enough reason to celebrate those who took out time to get good grades in the midst of this chaos. My 2-1 gave me a scholarship. I know many 2-1's and first classes who are working at good places and earning mad dough. Some went to shell, some went to Schlumberger. A friend I knew beat the record in his department and went to California on a full scholarship. He was offered a Ph.D., he chose to work. Yes, there are exceptions, where people graduate in uni and fail at life, and yes there out outliers, but the important thing is to push yourself to give your best wherever you find yourself. School isn't the end, agreed, you should always develop yourself, and like someone said earlier, people who had a bad grade in school might experience a change of attitude and succeed. Give your best wherever, never stop learning, and ignore consolation posts that somehow try to denigrate people who worked hard in school. Most of them aren't failures...I can tell you that for free, especially those of my own set as we still keep in touch and compare notes. Lastly, when you are applying for some certain opportunities, your grades will speak for you, especially when there's stiff competition. Take it or leave it. 15 Likes 2 Shares |
