The bloc needs to shift its attention to financial and military support for Ukraine, its top diplomat said

The EU has limited options remaining for new sanctions it can impose on Russia, the bloc’s foreign affairs chief, Josep Borrell, admitted in an interview with Euractiv on Friday. He argued that the EU should instead seek other ways to support Ukraine.

“There is not much more to do from the point of view of sanctions, but we can continue to increase financial and military support,” Borrell told the outlet following a meeting of EU defense ministers.

He claimed that one year after Russia launched its military campaign in Ukraine, it would be “strange” if the EU still had significant options left. “We have been using our step-by-step process, and we have been incremental – maybe sometimes too incremental,” Borrell stated.

The EU has unveiled 10 sanctions packages against Moscow since it launched its offensive against Ukraine in late February last year. Borrell acknowledged that the bloc was “getting to the end of the ladder,” and instead suggested focusing on support for Kiev.

“Ukraine needs a lot of money just to keep the machinery working, a state at war has a lot of financial needs – this will require a lot of effort from our side – so sanctions and military support are not everything,” Borrell insisted, also claiming that it was Europe’s responsibility to support Kiev by providing arms and ammunition.

In the same interview, Borrell proposed converting the bloc’s financial capacity into military capabilities, in a bid to affect the front line and boost training for Ukrainian soldiers. He has previously suggested reimbursing €1 billion ($1.06 billion) to EU member states for providing Kiev with ammunition.

Borrell’s comments come after EU defense ministers agreed on Wednesday to speed up the supply of 155-millimeter ammunition to Ukraine. Asked if the initiative could extend to heavy weaponry, the diplomat said the EU “could be equally fast for other needs.”

Moscow has repeatedly warned against Western arms deliveries to Ukraine, arguing that it only serves to prolong the bloodshed and will ultimately fail to change the outcome of Russia’s military operation.

They still have to sanction all factories producing shovels and hoes in Russia cause shovels and hoes are what Russia is now using to fight in Ukraine according to them.

The west believes so much in their unilateral sanctions instead of diplomacy, hence the fact that their sanctions towards Russia are largely ineffective was distasteful to them.

Isn't it common sense that Russia would have sanction-proof its economy before going to Ukraine? Especially when China, their neighbor, and ally also share the same enemy? Also, Russia was sanctioned heavily in 2014 after Crimea´s ascension to Russia, so they had eight years to prepare before the SMO.

Like an ultimatum, sanctions become useless and worthless when your opponent gives you the middle finger. Sanctions are only useful in a unipolar world where one power has a monopoly on everything. That era has passed. The G7 combined didn't even grow economically compared to China just last year.

For example, in 1945 the US controlled 50% of the world economy today effectively it owns less than 12%. In 1980, 65 out of 160 nations supported the U.S. boycott of the Moscow Olympics, but in the 2020 Beijing Olympics, less than 5 out of 195 countries agree to an official representative boycott request from the US.

It's clear to the global south that the world is at the dawn of a multipolar world, but the US-led west prefers to live in delusion because this reality is too painful to accept, since the whole international system they built will crumble, and possibly civil war erupting at home.

Russia might be troubled now, but I bet that the west has awakened a monster in them. They will single-handedly nail the coffin of western hegemony. Putin has been calling for a BRICS currency since the war, something is cooking, just watch and see.

I remembered when I said EU and USA rushed their sanctions on Russia too early and some people Called me names.
Those sanctions made USA allies look like a fool that even Gulf nations, South America countries, larger part of Asia and Africa countries refused to join the sanctions.

The Qatar that rushed to join USA and EU have since withdrawn their sanctions small small on Russia.

Japan that made noise on imposing oil cap on Russia, have started importing Russia oil in January saying they needed it as Saudi Arabia increased price of oil going to Asia again.

According to report, Japan are paying for Russia oil in Ruble.
China and Saudi Arabia have agreed, that China will pay for oil in Chinese currency.

Oh forgot, notice that the EU and NATO countries making noises on Russia too much are the same set of parasites nations which are Poland, Estonia and Co.
They can’t even function without German and France money, they are useless to EU but on like Hungary that knew her place, those ones are always making noise.

Sanctions against Russia have always been poised to fail. For sanctions to be successful, the country needs to depend on the US dollar and euro to purchase food, energy (fuel, gas, and all), and basic necessities like soap, small electronics and all.

Russia doesn’t need to purchase any of these as it manufactures them from scratch. Russia is one of the few countries that turns raw material into finished goods and still have a market for it.

The rest either have the raw materials but cannot turn it into finished goods (like Africa), can create finished goods but don’t have natural resources (like the West), or can turn raw materials into finished goods but don’t have the market (like guess who? Ukraine).

Ukraine is an economic powerhouse and that’s why the EU will never take it. The EU was founded to create a market for German, French, and UK goods. And if anyone thinks Germany and France (which are export-oriented economies) are ready to share their markets with Ukraine, you’re mistaken. That’s why the EU will never take Ukraine into its fold.

Back to the sanctions, Russia’s ability to turn natural resources into finished goods is the reason the sanctions failed. For instance, when the sanctions were imposed, we heard of McDonalds and Levi jeans leaving Russia. If sanctions were imposed on Nigeria, which companies will leave? Shell and everyone else stealing our raw materials.

We’ll suddenly find ourselves unable to buy food cos we import them and fuel will be expensive because we don’t refine and need the US dollar and Euros to buy them. On top of that, we will be unable to sell our fuel, because again, the US dollar and euros. That never happened with Russia.

No Russian will protest because McDonalds and Levi jeans left their country. But they will protest if they don’t get food and fuel to heat their homes and power their cars.

It will collapse. The USA currently is very broke. By summer, the USA may not be able to pay for the interest on its 32T USD debt. It's a house of cards that has outlived all maneuvering, that the only thing that can save it is to defeat Russia and bail itself out via the spoilage of conquer.

Indeed, interesting time ahead

Not whole world, but weak countries that don't have an independent economic system, and dependent on western systems. For example it won't affect Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, Syria.

It also won't affect unrecognized countries, since they dont trade with USD. It will affect Nigeria, since Nigeria depends so much externally and have no independent economic system or national resilience.

If Ukraine war in the other side of the world that had nothing to do with us made life worse for us, then we are royally fuccked. I mean we don't even refine our oil. Heavily indebted and have citizens whom are mostly a baggage than a asset to the country.

China and Russia knows what's coming. For example, China have been dumping USD bonds in hundreds of billions annually, same with Japan, massively buying gold and reducing its dollars external reserves. Same with Russia before the war.

Currently, dollars is not a legal tender in Russia. In China, foreign bank cards doesn't work there except for few international stores. You can only pay with wechat app. China have prepared themselves for that day, and if USD crashes, it's like pouring water on a duck's feather. It won't affect them at all.

But you see us in Africa, especially Nigeria, and basically ECOWAS. On that day, it would be judgement day. We have been messed up for long, but loans and bailing from international institutions kind of push the judgement day to the future.

Now imagine if the US wage war on us. I mean, you want to fight them with the military hardware you bought from them? Or expect them to ship our refined oil to power our military vehicle to fight them? Lol.

McDonalds were bought by Russians and Russia still sells the same product they use to sell only differenv it Russia ingredients.

If EU and USA imposed the sanctions slowly then it could have killed Russia economically and physically but they rushed all the sanctions at once, which made other countries from Asia, Africa, South and North America continents back off.
Swiss messed up big time, which made many countries now withdraw their money from Swiss banks, that last week Swiss president cried out that Swiss wouldn’t be sending weapons to Ukraine again, Swiss have to maintain neutral.
But it’s too late, UAE is the new Swiss.

Last week one of French biggest supermarkets announced its opening more stores in Russia, as many Chinese, Indians businesses are taking over from EU stores that left.
