Former US President Donald Trump is set to face trial for the alleged rape of E. Jean Carroll, a former advice columnist. The trial is a result of a lawsuit filed by Carroll against Trump, accusing him of raping her in a Manhattan department store in the mid-1990s. Trump, who denies the allegations, has been trying to avoid the trial, arguing that he cannot be sued for actions taken while he was president. Carroll's lawsuit was filed in 2019, and it has been making its way through the courts since then. The case gained renewed attention when the US Justice Department under Trump attempted to take over the case, arguing that Trump was acting in his official capacity as president when he made the allegedly defamatory statements about Carroll.
