Babalola, who is also a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), made the proposal on Monday at a media briefing held at the Afe Babalola University in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

He raised fears that using the current Constitution to conduct another election in Nigeria would only reproduce the faulty leadership and system being experienced in the country.

In a bid to prevent Nigeria from slipping into such a situation, the legal icon stressed that a new constitution has become an urgent need.

Elder statesman, Chief Robert Clarke, has called for a tenure extension for President Muhammadu Buhari to enable him to tackle the nation’s problems before elections can be held.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) argued on Monday that the few months remaining before the 2023 elections are not sufficient to put an end to the insecurity in the country to make the conduct of the election possible.

Answering questions on Arise Television programme, he maintained that the Constitution provides that the President can extend his tenure for six months in the first instance if he feels that conditions are not good to carry out elections.

He averred that it was wrong to believe that the President cannot stay in office for more than eight years of two tenures.

According to him, the President can continue to give himself a fresh six months extension until such a time election could be held in the country.

Clarke warned that the nation may not survive if nothing was done before the elections.

The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, has alleged a sinister plot to cause a crisis that will lead to the postponement and disruption of the February 25 polls in Nigeria.

He stated this at the presidential campaign rally at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on Friday.

“They want to provoke you to violence, so that election will be disrupted and postponed, and they can cunningly introduce an interim government, that’s their plot. But this will backfire because we are wiser,” the former Lagos governor said.

The APC presidential candidate asked the people to stand firm and resist any negative plot by destroyers.

Activist Pastor of the House of God Church, Chris Okotie, has joined prominent Nigerians calling for an Interim National government to replace President Muhamamdu Buhari’s administration whose tenure expires next year.

Okotie, who spoke in Lagos yesterday, said the Presidential system of Government has failed, and should be jettisoned for the good of Nigerians.

He had contested for the office of the President three times but failed. Several times in his comments on national issues, Okotie claimed that he has the solution to Nigeria’s problems.

The controversial Pastor spoke barely three months after renowned legal luminary, Afe Babalola also called for the installation of interim government after the exit of Buhari in 2023.

Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, said the country has been damaged beyond repair, adding that the solution is to install a temporary Government that would usher in a new Government after the conduct of a Constitutional confab.

I am not in support of an interim government but I am saddened at what the DSS has been reduced to.

A special trained security outfit as the DSS that should be concerned and troubled that our nation has a drug lord as president-select, has now been reduced to an arm of a mere political party.

This is the same DSS that told us emiefele the CBN governor is involved in terrorism stuff.
They are now more like the mouth piece of a side of a political party.

Any patriotic Nigerian will be sad at what tinubu apc has turned the DSS to.

The sure thing is that the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria is supreme.
It is bigger than the DSS, yakubu mahood or any one of us.
Nigeria is not a banana republic where anything goes.
As long you don't meet the requirements of the constitution, you will be an unconstitutional president.

So guess the morbidly afraid APC can agree that mentioning "interim government" is not a crime? After Nigeria had one in 1993. Meanwhile, hope they will also ask for the arrest of these fellas?

So Op, what is the point of this your thread?? Mentioning interim government is not a taboo in Nigeria last time I checked. However, why some people are pushing the conversation now is what I don’t understand! INEC declared a president-elect, aggrieved parties are in court. So what’s the interim govt needed for again when all democratic processes are yet to be exhausted??

No civilian can plan interim government except the president and the military.

Every political speech without expression of voilent falls into freedom of speech.

Do you know what is involved in installation of interim government? It includes suspension of the constitution.

This is Mischievous Fake news

Afe Babalola said this long ago ,Last year April to be exact

They are trying to make it look like he said it after Elections which he didn't

Some foreigners might be trying to destabilise Nigeria

You're just being mischievous, Afe babalola and Okotie were advocating for a new constitution and restructuring ahead of general elections. They believed the Constitution is defective and the incoming administration would be working in a faulty foundation as others did, which has been the bane of the country's retrogression. Therefore, a need to constitute an interim Govt to birth in a new constitution ahead of a new regime. However, the call was ignored because an interim Govt is not constitutional. But enemies of the state who are hell bent on razing down the country as a result of election loss, going to the media to incite the public, demanding the suspension of the inauguration of a constitutionally elected President and also sponsoring protests to demand for an interim Govt, such mischievous group of people and their principals will be thrown in jail and nothing will happen.

In simple English, Interim National Government is a coup. Any ING has no constitutional legs to stand on. It can only be imposed, but who will impose it? The military? You see, a bunch of losers cannot sit down somewhere and decree that an ING be imposed on the country, especially after an election winner has just been announced.

Yes, there were protests about the presidential elections. But it is also true that aggrieved parties have gone to court. Therefore, let us allow the constitutional process over this matter to conclude logically.

Interim National Government is an aberration we don't need now.
