IGP, NHRC, NBA, Govs, Interior Minister - Release Nigerians Wasting In Jail by Nobody: 10:14am On Apr 06, 2023
It has come to my attention that many Nigerians are languishing in Jail for petty offences.
Someone who is just out from prison confirmed many touching stories from inmates whose lives are being destroyed by the Nigerian police force, for offences that are bail-able. Some are in jail because they can't afford bail and have no one to help. This is unacceptable. No human being should be treated like this.

At the Force headquarters and in many prisons across the country, young Nigerians are being held for 5-8 months, without access to lawyers and without trial, over minor offences and in some cases, some innocent ones are being held as well. This is completely unacceptable. Where is the NBA and the NHRC in all this. Where is the Minister of Interior who should be making policies for the agencies under him. Where is the National Assembly to make laws to stop the mistreatment of Nigerians by police.

The Nigerian Police has violated and is still violating the fundamental rights of inmates. They also violate of the Constitution of Nigeria by holding people for 8months without trial and without legal representation. And refusing to release people because they cannot afford bail.

Please, everyone as a matter of urgency, should see to the massive nationwide review of all cases and release of minor offenders who have spent over 3months in Jail. 3months jail term is sufficient for minor offenders, bailed or not-bailed. And they should be released forthwith. We are all humans and mortal; we would render account to God for our time on earth and for how we used the power that was given to us.

The NHRC, National Assembly, Minister, IGP, NBA and all well meaning Nigerians should take up this matter urgently. Imagine it's your brother being held up in Jail over nothing or over little things. Pls do something asap. Peoples' lives are being destroyed. Pls act fast.
