SUBTITLE: "Remembering the Rwanda Genocide: Lessons Learned and the Importance of Never Forgetting"

Today marks the anniversary of one of the darkest periods in modern history: the beginning of the Rwandan Genocide. On this day, April 7, in 1994, the killing spree that claimed the lives of over 800,000 Rwandans began.

The genocide was the culmination of years of tension and violence between the country's two major ethnic groups: the Hutus and the Tutsis. The Hutus, who made up the majority of the population, had long resented the Tutsis, who were seen as wealthier and more privileged. The tension had simmered for years, but it came to a head in April 1994.

On this day, a plane carrying Rwandan President Juvénal Habyarimana was shot down near the capital city of Kigali. It's still unclear who was responsible for the attack, but it served as a spark that ignited the already volatile situation. Within hours, the Hutu government began a campaign of violence and terror against the Tutsis and any Hutus who opposed their rule.

The violence was brutal and swift. Hutu militias, armed with machetes and other crude weapons, went from village to village, killing Tutsis and moderate Hutus. The government broadcast propaganda urging Hutus to "cut down the tall trees," a code for killing Tutsis. Tutsis were hunted down and killed in their homes, in churches, and on the streets. Women were raped, and children were murdered in front of their parents.

The international community was slow to respond to the crisis. The United Nations had a peacekeeping force in Rwanda at the time, but it was not given the mandate to intervene. The U.S. government, under President Bill Clinton, was hesitant to get involved after the disastrous mission in Somalia the previous year. By the time the international community began to act, it was too late for many of the victims.

The genocide lasted for three months before the Rwandan Patriotic Front, a Tutsi-led rebel group, seized control of the country. The killing stopped, but the country was left devastated. The death toll was estimated to be between 800,000 and 1 million people, and the country was left with deep scars that are still felt today.

In the years since the genocide, Rwanda has made significant strides toward healing and reconciliation. The government has invested in education and infrastructure, and the country has become a model for development in the region. But the memory of the genocide still looms large, a reminder of the terrible consequences of hatred and violence. On this day, we remember the victims of the Rwandan Genocide and vow to work toward a more peaceful and just world.
Without history, there will be no memory, and without memory, there will be no future.
