And people like ilordspy and madridguy are busy attacking obedients... as they are saying obedients are disrespectful and insulting everyone that's against them, the kia price is part of the many problems.... Nigerians have been disrespected for 8yrs thru poverty, insecurity, election violence, disenfranchisement and so many more ... and u expect obedients to keep quiet after one man decided to steal the peoples choice ... u expect us to keep quiet so that u criminals can further crash us to point negative ... APC warriors were worse in 2014/ 15 ... u threatened to have a parallel government if u don't win the elections, u threatened that dogs and baboons will be soaked in blood , u brought in terrorists into the country to create havoc in the country , u insulted the living day light of of the then sitting president, u carried a mock coffin and displayed the sitting president in it , u stopped electorates from voting their preferred candidate, threatening to main or kill anyone that goes against ur preferred choice , ur Tinubu said power must be taken by force , ur Tinubu said labour party supporters will labour in vain ... u have brought out the beast in people so better accept what is happening... obedients dint even do 10 percent of what u people did . Now una wan claim innocent...Never

Even with an exchange rate of 740 to 1 dollar, the Kia optima/k5 is over $40,000!!!

The highest trim level of the same car in the US is $31,000

For comparison, the highest trim of same car sold by Dana in 2015 is $25,000 ( using exchange rate of 220 to 1 usd.

Why? Import duties? Or just pure greed?

It's like you just start driving new cars. grin grin grin
Those features have been in cars for years.

The price of cars drastically increase since last year. So no big deal when you look at the increase and the USD rate.

The price of cars increased in the last 2 years. A difference of 15k over 8 years is much I had a difference of 8k in about 2 years.

Now you are asking the right questions. I believe we can critique government much more constructively but stats like this that doesn't flesh out the real details of things or factor in reality of global economy sucks. You can talk about how your country hasn't met some metrics but people need to get more understanding before going off against government for every single thing.

First KIA likely had a rebate program to sell more cars and were willing to sell at a loss to just gain market size back in 2014. Also lots of tax exclusion were applied to encourage local production back then so people could purchase new cars. You can't forever be applying tax rebates for corporate coys so their products are affordable. It has to end at some point.

Also there were credible claims that base model KIAs that was shipped or assembled in Nigeria back then didn't even come installed with a lot of safety features for example driver airbags, passenger airbags, side Airbags and ABS were missing. No wonder they were cheap as Bleep. Lol maybe na 2 stroke engine dem even glue join together for those 2014 models.

See for example
https://www.nairaland.com/431821/kia-rio-no-get-airbag

Lesser features = less price points.

Can we do a comparison of those features and added costs? I am sure the 2014 Picanto won't feature reverse camera or on screen display. Those are likely to be present in the 2023 models . Those upgrades cost money

Even at the rate of $15,000 which the Kia Picanto might have sold for in 2015 and an exchange rate of N160 to $1, that amounts to about N2.5million without duties or taxes. Which points to my earlier thoughts that the 2015 prices were likely without the recommended features, saftey tools or they were selling at a loss.

Also the 2014 had a 1.0 litre engine. I guess that's been upgraded in this 4th gen to 1.3 or so and the 2023 is more roomier which means much more money.

Also the op stays in Canada and should know of the supply chain issues after covid and the attendent inflation worldwide. Even in Canada, the MSRP of a Civic or Corrola in 2014 was $16,000. That same base model would sell for nothing less than $22,000 currently and that's even if you get it delivered after waiting for 2 years or more. Dealers are selling such cars at $27,000+. Go on Autotrader.ca and find me one single brand new Corrolla that is selling at the manufacturer's price of $22k for the base models. Least you would get is $27k. That's a whooping $11,000 on the 2014 prices. I guess that's Buharis fault also? I doubt the minimum wage in Canada has increased so significantly in those 8 years to warrant such differences . Don't even get me started on used cars, running slight cosmetic issues Honda accord 2003 that used to sell for $600 to $800 in Canada just 2018/2019 now costs at least $4000 for a good running one in 2023. If you were to import that into Nigeria, how much would you sell it for?

You need to also compare import duty on cars in 2014 vs 2023 in Nigeria. As at 2022 import duty for cars was 35% and one of the reasons for such high duties was to encourage local production. I don't have figures for 2015. All these need to be factored in before we print pictures and start comparing apples and oranges. Yeah, government hasn't done so well, but constructive criticism needs to be put forward when critizing. Worldwide things hasn't been the same in the last 3 years for citizens and Nigeria is definitely not an isolated scenario were prices of goods have doubled in a short span.

Just to buttress the useless 2M naira price in 2014. A poster on that thread page 3 posted images of a Kia he bought from Dana brand new without the SRS airbag inscription on the steering wheel. Which meant there was no airbag installed on a brand new car. What other featurs were missing for them to sell it at 2million? Probably mechanical windows, instead of steel bodies they had some knock off 3rd grade body?

No wonder they were cheap as chips back then.
