From NLC President To Senate President : "Senate Rules" And Adams Oshiomhole's Call For SP

The beauty of the incoming administration is that it represents a fresh start towards a new set of governance. From the presidential villa to the national assembly and across the majority of states, it is a new dawn of fresh faces.

This means new hope and a fresh breath of air; no two people are same, thus the incoming administration would function extremely independently from the status quo, whether you embrace the fact or not it is a doctrine of the DEFAULT SYSTEM.

While the battle and intense lobby for principal positions in the National Assembly has begun in earnest across political parties, Nigerians' expectations of who will head the 10th NASS are also high.

Who is eligible to run for the seat of the senate presidency is a hot topic that everyone is talking about besides the geopolitical region, and this debate is especially hot right now because of the contest's uniqueness.

Several have promoted the claim that, in accordance with standing Senate rules, only a ranking senator may assume the office of Senate President, but others have refuted this claim.

Before we get started on our discussion of today's potential candidates for the 10th Senate president, I want to pose a rhetorical question:

If someone had told you 12 years ago that the NASS would have a senate president from one political party and the deputy senate president from a different political party, what would your response have been, just as it was with Saraki of the APC and Ekweremadu of the PDP?

The "infamous" Senate rule that has been ferried around that it excludes a first timer may, however, have been created for a certain purpose and for certain people in a particular time frame for a singular purpose.

A list of all the Senate Presidents from 1960 to date demonstrates clearly that if there ever was a standing rule like that, then the exigencies was definitely for a narrow self-centered purpose.

Here is the full list of all Senate Presidents right from independence to present day.

1 Nnamdi Azikiwe served as SP in 1960 under the NCNC
2 Dennis Osadebay served as SP from 1960-1963 under the NCNC.
3 Nwafor Orizu served from 1963-1966 under the NCNC
4 Joseph Wayas served as SP from 1979- 1983 under the NPN
5 Iyorchia Ayu served as SP from 1992-1993 under the SDP
6 Ameh Ebute served as SP in 1993 under the SDP
7 Evan Enwerem served in 1999 under the PDP
8 Chuba Okadigbo1999-2000PDP
9 Anyim Pius Anyim served from 2000-2003 under the PDP.
10 Adolphus Wabara served from 2003-2005 under the PDP
11 Ken Nnamani served from 2005-2007 under the PDP
12 David Mark served from 2007-2015 under the PDP
13 Bukola Saraki seven from 2015 -2019 under the APC
14 Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan is ten current Senate President from 2019 till date and serving under the APC.

Now, from the above list: From the first Senate President , Nnamdi Azikiwe, to the ninth Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, they were all beginners. Thus, given that 9 of the 14 Senate Presidents in the past were first-timers, what is the rationale behind the so-called Senate rule?

What would happen then if by chance the 109 senatorial districts in the current senate elected fresh senators?

Perhaps they wouldn't have had a Senate President, or would they have passed a new law? Hence, as you can see, if a standing rule of such a nature were to be implemented, it would be for a particular local goal, namely, the disenfranchisement of some contenders at a specific time.

Why the call for Adams Oshiomhole to become the 10th Senate President.

What do Nigerians desire if not prosperity? What more do they require if not the rule of law and fair play? The core of Nigerians' goal is to live in a country where merit works for everyone and strong institutions protect the vulnerable.

Oshiomhole is a certified freedom fighter who has been battling on behalf of the masses since he was 17 years old. He rose to prominence fighting for the rights of workers and the common man who has no one to look out for him.
One point that can never be disputed is that the ruling party, the APC, will produce the next Senate President, and what the party and its president-elect require is a NASS that is entirely committed to its vision and ideas for taking the country forward.

Oshiomhole, thankfully, matches the card; the Deputy Director General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council is an embodiment of performance and competency; Oshiomhole's pro-labor views are just what the people requires.

As president of the Senate, he would not only speed up the presidency's delivery of the constitutionally guaranteed dividend of democracy, but he would also be a benefit to the populace, who look up to pro-people policies that ensure their safety.

To a considerable extent, the Senate also supervises the private sector by ensuring that their corporate existence is beneficial to the people and host communities.

With Adams Oshiomhole as Senate President, most agencies, both public and private, would realize that their fundamental services are to fulfill the decent expectations of the populace, and no one is more positioned to protect their interests than former NLC president, Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole.

As a former APC National Chairman, he will undoubtedly ensure that the party is well protected and carried forward in its legislative tasks.

In other words, his election as SP would benefit both the political elite, as represented by the APC, and the general public, who would be able to rest easy knowing that their interests are being protected by the government's legislative branch. This would be a win-win situation for Nigerians.

At this juncture, Nigerians do not need trial and error; only dedicated and trustworthy hands should be given the opportunity to turn the country around.

The truth be say e no get where rain no dey fall and when e fall e go touch everybody the Senate Presidency has been opened to all since 1960 and no be today e go change.

What I see is a journey of a dedicated patriotic Nigerian from NLC President to Senate President, and I believe history will be kind to Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole.

As long as I would prefer Oshio Baba over any of the contenders ,however,a first timer can never be a Senate president under this 4th republic.

The list of those people you mentioned was as a result of all of them were first timers,or there was no standing rule excluding first timers .

But under this 4th Republic, a first timer can never be a Senate president . Why can't people respect rules in established institutions, must APC always destroy rules to favour someone? May a Tinubu never happen to our democracy again. This guys are so lawless

Whether SP or CP, that na dia problem.
The man problem in Nigeria is that many men are currently suffering in their marriages simply because they married a woman who lacks the morals of staying a virgin. She opened her legs because of two eggs and indomie, now she wants to pin her ex's children and her smelly pvssy on any man.

If you are happy in your marriage with a non virgin woman, hit share.

If you wish to marry a virgin woman, hit like.

very crafty but disingenuous comment. All the scenarios you mentioned occurred in new democratic dispensations where there were no ranking members so all senators were equal....anyone who emerged SP was by default a new member because all members were new, no senator outranked another. In all the scenarios you listed, a 1st timer had to emerge SP because there were NO ranking members, the only occasion where there were ranking members (oct-dec83) a ranking member was re-elected (Wayas). Feel free to disprove or present a scenario where ranking members existed and a newbie emerged SP.

I have no problem with Oshiomole as SP but he is a new senator and ranking rules should be respected.

Oshobaba does not have any experience. He doesn't know how things are done in the Senate. He's a first-timer. GOA is the right man for the job given his wealth of experience in the Senate as a former minority leader.

Does anyone still submerge its thought in who become what or not, after the highly mismanaged electoral cycle?
Governance will become interesting again when representatives of each political party reflect the wishes of the people.
