Gowon must apologise to Igbo over his role in Civil War – PDP

The Abia state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said the former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon(rtd) must apologise to the people of the Southeast over his role in the Biafra Civil War.

The acting State Publicity Secretary of the PDP in Abia, Abraham Amah, in a statement, said Gowon’s name unsettles a lot of people in the Southeast due to his involvement in the Civil War.

Amah was reacting to a statement that Gowon, alongside the state governor-elect, Alex Otti, would lead a prayer session in the state on Sunday.

The prayer session is scheduled to be held at Master’s Vessel Church in Umuahia area of state.

The statement read: “The attention of the Abia PDP has been drawn to a news item in circulation on social media indicating that Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, would on Sunday April 23 lead a prayer session in one Master’s Vessel Church Umuahia, Abia State under the auspices of his pet project, Nigeria Prays, to herald a new Abia. Whatever ‘a new Abia’ means.

“The name, Yakubu Gowon is unsettling to many people in the South-East given the ignoble roles he played during the Biafran Civil War for which he is yet to render any public apology.”

Amah said the choice of Gowon as special guest in a state that is the home town of slain General Aguiyi Ironsi was insensitive.

The PDP noted that Abia state had produced a Catholic Bishop and other high-ranking clergymen.

It stressed that Gowon had yet to publicly admit his mistakes in the Civil War.

Amah stated: “The only way the prayer session would make meaning to the millions of Southeasterners, dead and alive, is for Gowon to use the opportunity of the prayer session and convert it to a moment of truth and apologise to the people for his role in the atrocious war that led to the untimely death of millions of our very resourceful people,” he added.

As in, this is very unnecessary.

You fought a war and lost, but you are still clutching at straws of victimhood.

Nigerians can as well demand and never forgive biafrans for the war. I don't know how certain people get to be in public places to be making these statements.

Not everything is politics.

OP, i get the sense that your intentions are genuine, but most of these type of pro-Igbo threads you create on here will achieve little besides attracting Igbo-hating vermin! Besides, i doubt PDP said what you’re attributing to them, and if they did make a statement on Gowon and the pogrom pre and during the uncivil war, then it’s possible you may have misunderstood their message!

I know for a fact that APC or PDP can NEVER make such a statement as both parties are the anti-thesis to the values of justice and equity that Ndigbo hold dear….values which led us to fight back in the late 60s!

Who will then apologise for these:

Ironsi the first military head of state an Igbo man after the first military coup was the one that changed from regional government to the federal system of government we have today?

And this one too:
"before Ojuku declared the
republic of biafra in may 1967
Isaac Adaka Boro an Ijaw man had declared the
Niger delta republic in february 1966.
Boro had formed the niger delta
volunteer force an armed militia with
members consisting mainly of his fellow
ethnic group declared the niger delta
republic on february 23 1966 and fought
nigeria's federal forces for 12 days but
they were eventually defeated and then
jailed by the Ironsi federal
military government [and Ojuku eastern governor] for treason"

But it was Gowon from Plateau State that later set Boro free and Boro later became a major in the Nigeria army.

The South South also lost Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh the finance minister of Nigeria during coup too.

When will East apologize to the North and west for killing our leaders in the 1st coup.

Only SW lost leaders in both 1st and 2nd coup, even tho its not our fight

Adekunle fajuyi died trying to protect Aguiyi ironsi a visitor who brought death to house, when will East show respect and acknowledge yorubas have done what they can never do ...

we don"t even need apology just show respect cos SW earned it

Your poor attempts at revisionism stink even from a mile away!

First of all, what’s your ethnicity and state, so we can place your answers in their proper context!

Also, the Ironsi unification decree was an attempt at bringing the military governors of the regions under a central command-and-control structure for which the military worldwide is known for! Or where you expecting the regional gov’ts to have the same autonomy under a military regime as they had in a civilian/democratic one!? Said unification decree DID NOT tamper with the fiscal-federal aspects of the regions government structure in their relation to Dodan Barracks! And finally, the decree was yet to be gazetted and functional before the counter-coup occurred!

It was the northern military, political, clerical and traditional elite who, using a young and naive Gowon as the frontman and face of their regime, went ahead to dismantle the number, political structure and fiscal-federal makeup of the regions….effectively bringing in a unitary system of government, in all but name, which has persisted to the present day in one form or another!

This ‘Niger Delta Republic’ you claim Adaka Boro declared, can you furnish us with the following details: the limits of the new Republic….ie, the ethnicities it was made up of; it’s capital; the time and place all the ethnicities met and agreed to go along with Boros’ plan for secession; and the ethnicities in the Niger Delta that fought the Ironsi led military gov’t for 12 days!? In any case, Ironsi was another naive and trusting Igbo ‘one Nigerianist’ and Adaka Boro was not fighting Ndigbo for those 12 days….he was fighting the military gov’t of Nigeria! Also, during those tumultuous 12 days the fighting raged on, can you provide links or any kind of proof to show the then Northern, Western and Mid-Western Regions were in favour of a Niger Delta Republic and against the actions of the then Ironsi led national military gov’t!? Because you’re now making it look like it was the ‘big bad’ Igbo that were against and fought against the newly declared Niger-Delta Republic!

Cheers!

No. Awolowo raised the motion and the north supported it but Azikwe was against it..

First, apologize for ruining that state for 24 years now, before we will talk about Gowon Apologizing for the civil war atrocities.

Dude, you're responding to a post that asked specific questions which you've either dodged outright or glossed over! You wouldn't recognise history even if it came up and gave you a hard knock on your head!

You posit that when Boro declared his Niger-Delta republic 'it was consisting mainly of his Ijaw ethnic group'! Now are you telling us ALL the Ijaw in present day Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa states were part of this new Republic? If so, can we have links to your source or a clip to help buttress your assertion? Also, you used the word 'mainly', implying there were at least two other ethnic groups that signed up to this adventure! Can we have their names please? You don't just come out on social-media to make outlandish claims you can't defend...doing so is the very definition of revisionism and bold-faced lies!

Also, tell us the capital of this Republic he declared and who were its principal officers? I'm assuming he made himself President, so i wouldn't push for an answer on that!

You claim Igbos' picked him as an enemy once he had declared his Republic! Let me reiterate: you assert that the Igbo race saw Adaka Boro as their enemy once he had declared his Republic!!! Can you flesh out this claim a bit?.....When did Ndigbo meet or delegate anyone to declare Boro 'public enemy number-1' because he declared a Niger-Delta Republic? And since you're limiting the response to this declaration to just the Igbo, pray, can you tell us how the response and reaction of the Fulani and Yoruba to said declaration differed from that of Ndigbo! I'm assuming that while the Igbo were livid, their Fulani and Yoruba counterparts were cheering Boro on!?

How did Ndigbo 'start most of Nigerias' misfortune'? And since you infer we didn't 'start all of the misfortune....just some of it', can you tell us the remaining misfortune that the Fulani, Yoruba and Ijaw started? To show how pathetic you are and how you want to absolve everyone but the Igbo for where Nigeria is today....it's a known fact that the last time any Igbo was either president or head-of-state of Nigeria was more than half a century ago, and that the executive position (either under military or so called democratic dispensations) has been tossed mainly between the Fulani and Yoruba! This is a known fact! So just what is it that the Igbo did pre 1967 (that is assuming we voted to do something 'bad' to the rest of una) that the Fulani and Yoruba have been unable to undo all these years they've been passing the presidency between themselves?

Fact of the matter is, the Ijaw have made the wrong call and chosen to side with outsiders against their own neighbour that they've lived relatively peacefully with for centuries! The Igbo were never power drunk and hungry for their neighbours territory as to consider having a empire! The Igbo were the only major ethnic group who stood by an Ijaw president through thick and thin as the other two were plotting how to deny him a 2nd term in office! Had it not been for the saboteurs amongst the ranks of the Ijaw, Ogoni, Ikwerre....and even a few Igbo, by now we could have been talking of a Biafra that would be the most properous and most powerful black nation on earth! But look at where we all are today, just because of the over-sabi of Boro and his ilk! Even his brother once said something to the effect (and i paraphrase) that Boro was used by the Nigerian side to further their own interests!

Attached is a song sang by a Ijaw man, Cardinal Rex Lawson, during the war, and it shows Biafra had a common cause and focus, and was cohesive and unified going into the war. It was later on, down the line, that the scheming and evil Nigerian/federal side managed to find a few greedy and thoughtless sabos'...the weakest links in the chain, which eventually helped them break the ranks of the formidable Biafran side and isolate the Igbo!

Adaka Boro niger delta Republic was strictly for Ijaws,,,though it open doors for other ethnicities,, because Ijaws does not forced people..

igbos declared Ijaws enemies because they collectively go against the niger delta republic.

Ijaws were never part of the biafra..

Rex Lawson was a musician...a musician can be giving money to sing anything....
Musicians can be giving money to even insult their father.

Ijaws were never part of biafra as you made to believe......how on could Ijaws be part of biafra after some months of igbos crunching their own niger delta republic? if u get brain, u get truth story and the cook one from bastard Kanu.

meanwhile, I like the the song...ojukwu imiete e,,,,,biafra bolate e.

LOVEALAIGBO:

Your poor attempts at revisionism stink even from a mile away!

First of all, what’s your ethnicity and state, so we can place your ansstopwers in their proper context!

Cheers!
stopped mistaken Ijaws for igbos who can never stand alone..

Niger delta republic was mainly for Ijaws,,,though, it open doors for any ethnicity that feel oppressed in nigeria.

The Capital of the declared niger delta Republic was wilberforce.
The place for the meetings and plans was Kaiama.
Ethnicities in the any of it plans....Ijaw only

niger delta republic was limitless because it open doors for others too....

igbos are our number 3 enemies behind abokis and british
