Hello Nairalanders ,please this subject has been an issue at many homes .
I want to be cleared, between the father and the mother of a child who's entitled to name the child,or give the child his or her first name?. I will like us to look at it from all angles. Thanks.

Both are responsible, even some extended family members (depending) but the father can give the first name.

Traditions of where the parents comes from, play a key role in naming a child, so also do we have couples who both decide on names.

I know for certain that for my youngest sibling, my parents threw it open for us, her older siblings to come with our various Igbo names and her baptismal name before they finally settlied for 2 names.😊😊

Among the two parents, any one can choose a name for the child is born discuss with the partner and come to an agreement

But the funny aspect of it is that the mother picks the one name she likes among the names and start calling the child with that name and that's what the child grows up with

So I think both of them should decide on what name a child should bear

The father and mother should come up with a name decide on it, infact before the child is born they should have agree on the first name the child will bear since they already know the gender of the baby before birth.

The name is usually decided right from conception. But parties (father and mother) can come up with suggestion for male and female, then pick the one they both agree on.

Both parties does the job of picking the names, most times the grandparent are giving the honour of picking the names too.

E.g, My grandmother picked mine, the plenty names my parents picked didn't matter cos she insisted that's the name God said I must bear so they let it sink.🤷

I've already picked my kids names, the dad can do justice to the native names that way equation go balance. 😊

What if they both comes out with different names.. and couldn't agree on one . Biblically or traditionally is it the father's option or the mother's own that prevails ??

It's the father's own that prevails cos he's the head of the family, and is the one family members and church members would go to for the name of the child.

I don't think so, dangote, bezoz, bill gates etc names didn't catapult them to affluence. I was named by my fathers friend. My opinion is: whoever names the child should be approved by the father. The child can even grow up and abandon those name just like Cassius clay decided to be Mohammed ali

This should be discussed during courtship and an agreement that aligns with the couples view reached. If I choose to father a child, the child takes on my last name and I am likely giving the first name because I already have names for my kids.

It should be a joint decision between the mother and father. I once had an Orthodontist who said he and his wife (a Psychologist) decided to give their female kids unisex and non-ethnic first names, to prevent them from facing discrimination in the future. I believe they named one of them "Jordan". In any case, both should come to an agreement on the chosen first name, with the mother's preference being slightly higher, especially if it's her first child. Perhaps, one person can choose the first name, while the other chooses the middle. Then for the next child, they can alternate (the party that got first dibs for the first child will choose the middle name this time around, while the other chooses the first).

The child is not going to have only one name so what's the fuss?

Wife should give her own husband will give his own.

Even grandparents too give names.

All names (as long as they have good meanings) will be given to pastor to call during naming then the parents decide which two goes into the birth certificate as first and middle name mostlikely the names the mum and dad gave the baby shikena.
