Driver Flees As Truck Crushes Toddler To Death, Injures Mother And Others In Rivers (Photos)

A trailer driver immediately fled an accident scene for fear of being mobbed by residents and passers-by after his trailer conveying goods crushed a two-year-old child to death along the Rumuosi area of the East/West Road in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State on Saturday night, April 22, 2023, IGBERETV reports.

According to an eyewitness the truck driver who was on a high speed, lost control when he approached the Rumuosi junction due to gridlock. The driver was trying to avoid ramming into many people when it climbed the median, fell on one side and crushed the toddler in the process. He said that the mother of the deceased and two other children were injured and were rushed to the hospital.

“You know this federal road always has traffic gridlock at the Rumuosi junction. The man (truck driver) was on speed and he could not apply the brake. So what he did because of the speed was that he climbed the walk-over (median)," the witness narrated.

“If he went straight he would have crushed all those people by the side. So he used his steering and climbed the walk-over. There were people too inside the walk-over, some mothers and children. So as they heard the trailer lost control and people were shouting,”

"They ran to one side, but the trailer now fell on the walk-over. All the goods it carried poured out. From there, the trailer fell on one side hitting the mother and the children. But only the two-year-old boy died.”

Spokesperson for the State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the incident, said that investigation was ongoing.

"We are aware of the incident. It is very unfortunate. We are on the trail of the driver that ran away to ensure he is arrested. So investigation is ongoing to that effect,” she added.

It was a Bua truck conveying Bags of pastas. The accident happened Round 9:30 to 10 there-about. The hausa or fulani driver having descended from the obirikwere fly-over was on full speed, (I don't know if this is his first time plying the route, because a driver should know that traffic starts from that AP filling station, till you've passed rumuekini junction due the the roadside sellers and illegal loading of cars, busses and bikes.)

The driver seem to have lost control of the steering and had no option but to crash-climb onto the sidewalk kerb, on doing so, the trailer fell on a mother and and children. (some eye witnesses said 4 children some said 2.) one of the toddler died instantly, while the mother and another child was rushed to the hospital unconscious.

The driver and his motor boys took off instantly. When the crowd gathered, one of the motors boys came back think he wont be identified. For the timely response of senior people he would have been lynched.

This happened on Saturday.

First of all I want to say RIP to the dead, and to the injured, I wish y'all a speedy recovery.

That being said, I believe the driver did the right and smart thing in fleeing the scene, but he should do even better by reporting himself to the police and explaining things more to them.
