So this country cannot raise 4-6billion dollars to build a refinery to boost local production.. but rushed to collect loan of more than 800millions dollars. This minister of finance is the worst so far.. no tangible input, only announcement of loans always. would we ever get it right in Nigeria..

Hmnn. So, Nigerian government has been funding and even obtaining loans on behalf of Dangote's refinery?

Even now, there is no assurance that it will be completed soon enough. Yet those promoting subsidy removal keep making reference to the refinery.

Is it greediness or what? Why wouldn't Dangote build a smaller refinery and have it completed on time? He just want it to be referred as the single largest train refinery in the world. SMH.

Dangote has no business brain. Dangote is a private arm of the government

Guy leave the debtor limit,we are talking of Dangote worth over $30b. When the refinary was about starting, he went for a consortium of banks in Nigeria for loan, they (banks) failed, the man had to seek foreign bank loans to start.

Government officials embezzling the money made for public projects has been the reason Nigeria is where it is today and not because of subsidy. Nor be fuel subsidy dey hold Nigeria from developing or making Nigerians not to enjoy those good things the citizens of those advance countries are enjoying, but the embezzlement of public fund by the governments of all sectors in the country. And if those embezzlement don't stop, removing of subsidy or not will not change anything but rather add more suffering upon common Nigerians.
God bless you.The major reason for the suffering today is the refineries not working as we now spend over $10b importing fuel and other critical sectors denied forex, causing the price of imported goods to rise and the naira loosing it's value seriously, even airlines denied forex to remit the naira and causing exorbitant fares.PMB was in power for 8 years and could not solve this problem. Honestly, he is the worst president we have had when we sum up his general performance.

Nigeria kind of politics will finish her.

I still don't understand why a whole country of about 200m people can manage her resources. It is so disheartening.

Yet, these imcompetent leaders are busy fattening their pocket while subjecting the people to poverty.

We want to privatise every sector and tax them with taking responsibility only for spending money. The government don't want to develop anything while they hide under the excuse of African country, third world country, probably underdeveloped country. This shouldn't be our conditioning.

The reason they are investing in dangote in to get the big bulk constantly that they might simply embezzle it by engaging in substandard project they build in state capitals while neglecting the poor people in her suburbs.

Subsidy removal will one hell of decision against the masses . Because whatever project will come out of its proceed will be concentrated in the city while the poor who can't afford to live there still pay for it.

What the hell.

The king of industries who is pressuring your government to take out $4 billion in loans in order to complete his refinery?

Yes ...he is still the king of industries..
That single man owns for than 27 different factories across the continent..in Nigeria alone he owns up to 13 industries (some completed ,others in progress..he didnt build them all with his personal money ...

Government assisted, loans were borrowed...even Elon musk didn't build his entire business empire him self ..the government assisted ..he had external financial support..

If you don't know how these industries run then rest .

Dangote's largest cement plant in kogi wasn't built entirely with his money..he had Obasanjo to help him with billions in foreign exchange and he borrowed from banks..

His largest sugar plant had CBN's billions in it..so does his many different plants..

This latest cement plant had Edo state government providing support..

He will complete his refinery the same way..it is not an odd approach.. mega projects like this are hardly financed from one sorce alone

Abeg, make we remove this subsidy

We have a choice. Either subsidy goes, or we keep on paying more and more in debt, or it keeps on rising till it eats a sum that is ten times our national budget.

We better stop making excuses. This should have been done since 1993. We refused to do it, and since then we have effing lost 4 refineries, and are dashing humdreds of people money in the name of siubsidy for nothing.

We better remove subsidy. Now. Or else, we are going to end up losing more money
The Government will stop paying for subsidy from July 1st.

Someone took about a minute to dismantle the bad belle “article” on SkyscraperCity… grin grin grin
https://www.skyscrapercity.com/threads/dangote-lagos-refinery.1927698/page-24

Too many fictional ‘facts’ to deconstruct, but here are the principal ones.

1) The fuel subsidy is not yet ended. It is billed to end in June (IMHO should have been ended decades ago).
2) The project is being financed principally from INTERNAL funds, despite the bank loan of $3.3 billion.
3) The Dangote Group did NOT ask the FG or the NNPC to take a 20 equity stake.
4) Instead, the NNPC decreed it was taking a 20% in Dangote Ref, Waltersmith Ref, and ALL domestic refs.
6) Only about $1billion of the assessed $2.76 billion equity value is in cash, the rest in crude supplies.
7) Equity is NOT paid after completion of a project, it is OWNERSHIP participation in a business.
8 ) Equity stake is NOT a loan. As ownership stake, it is only ”returned” through dividends/distribution of profits, if any.
9) Dangote Group did NOT miss any interest payments (nor default on any of its loans).
10) Rather, the group raised an additional $750m in corporate bonds in March, which was OVERSUBSCRIBED!
11) The project began test-running parts of the refinery in December, in anticipation of 2023 commissioning.
12) According to Bloomberg and S&P reports, the crude distillation unit (the heartbeat) began test-runs in March.

Sadly, there remains rampant functional illiteracy in the Nigerian public space.

The government is NOT taking loans to fund the Dangote Refinery.
The refinery is a $20 billion project, and the federal government has paid merely $1billion as part of its FORCED 20% ownership.

The government (through the NNPC) effectively seized a 20% stake in ALL private refineries in Nigeria (Dangote, Waltersmith, etc.) supposedly to secure national energy supplies. To pay for the 20% stake, which the banks/underwriters valued at $2.8 billion (in other words, what the 20% would be worth in the capital market), the NNPC is paying only $1 billion in cash, and will satisfy the remainder of its obligations via crude supplies (in the future) and by not collecting on some of the distribution of profits. In effect, the NNPC is getting present-day value of $2.8 billion (which goes into its balance of accounts today) with only a commitment for future obligations.

THE ENTIRE ARTICLE IS JUNK!!
