TONY JONES, PRESENTER: Convicted murderer Troy Davis has been executed in the southern US state of Georgia, ending an extraordinary legal case that drew hundreds of thousands of pleas for clemency from around the world.

Davis was sentenced to death in 1991 for killing off-duty police officer Mark MacPhail. Since his trial, seven of nine key witnesses recanted or changed their testimony, some alleging police coercion.
