On Sunday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, released a statement in Abuja urging opposition candidates in Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election to accept their defeat and stop complaining.

The statement was issued by Segun Adeyemi, the Special Assistant to the President on Media, Office of the Minister of Information and Culture.

Mohammed claimed that the opposition candidates lost the election because of their overconfidence and complacency. He further asserted that President Muhammadu Buhari had delivered the best election in Nigeria’s history, which was free, fair, and credible. According to him, the president deserved accolades for his efforts in ensuring a level playing field for all political parties.

The minister accused the opposition of relying on social media propaganda and faulty opinion polls to mislead their foreign backers and the media into thinking they were going to win. He added that Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, won the election by a majority of the votes cast and surpassed the constitutionally stipulated 25% of votes cast in each of at least two-thirds of all the states in the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
