THE 10TH SENATE LEADERSHIP BATTLE: WHO FITS BEST?

The 10th National Assembly is about to be inaugurated, but who will lead the Senate? The importance of the Legislature in our polity explains the high level of interest in who leads the business of the national assembly. Furthermore, a sizable majority of Nigerians believed that the 9th assembly, led by Sen. Ahmed Lawan, was ineffective.

The failure of the Lawan-led Senate to hold President Muhammad Buhari's administration accountable on an assortment of critical national issues highlights the importance of having senate leadership that understands its fundamental legislative obligations.

With President-elect Bola Tinubu set to assume office on May 29, all ministries of government are expected to be managed by individuals who will bring their experience and leadership expertise to bear in order to make the President-elect's Elect mantra of renewed hope for Nigerians a reality. There are presently three political gladiators contending for the position of Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and all things being equal, one of them will be elected.

GODSWILL AKPABIO

Senator Godswill Akpabio, also known as the "uncommon transformer," is a strong supporter of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and a high-ranking senator. As a former Governor and Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he has extensive political and administrative experience.

The request for the Senate President to be from southern Nigeria is also a positive political leverage that someone like Akpabio will openly welcome at this point in time. Regardless of his good traits, attributes, experience, and the political permutations favoring his candidacy, Godswill Akpabio is facing serious corruption allegations in court from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Ideally this is a significant moral and ethical setback that may jeopardize his chances of obtaining the necessary votes from his colleagues. Ideals, however, are frequently sacrificed on the altar of political expediency.

If he wins the Senate Presidency, the moral and ethical burden he bears will undoubtedly have an impact on the credibility of the office he holds.

Nigeria is suffering major reputational difficulties from persons in positions of power in numerous institutions, and as a new administration takes office on May 29, 2023, we must change the narrative by ensuring that corrupt free leaders emerge.

Dr. ABDUL AZEEZ ABUBAKAR YARI (Shettiman Mafara)

Senator Abubakar Yari is one of the most experienced Federal lawmakers running for Senate Presidency. Over the years, he has proven to be a pan-Nigerian, which has endeared him to millions of Nigerians. Yari is a two-term governor who previously served in the House of Representatives and now a ranking senator. He possesses substantial and well-tested legislative knowledge and experience. This is a clear indication that he is capable of leading the 10th Senate.

If we go back in time, Senator Abubakar Yari demonstrated exceptional leadership while serving as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum.

A position that only a few chosen governors might hold

Senator Yari used the position of the Nigerian Governors Forum to bring about and launch constructive policies that had genuine benefits on Nigerians through deft discussions and deliberations across the three branches of government.

His excellent leadership in a cross-party Forum, as well as his extensive experience in both Houses of our National Assembly, make him the most qualified candidate for the Senate Presidentship. Senator Abdul Yari has high regard for President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu's persona and leadership style. This is why a Yari’s Senate Presidency in the 10th assembly will fast track the developmental and governance plans of Bola Tinubu presidency through a healthy collaboration between the legislature and the executive.

ORJI UZOR KALU

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu is one of those expected to win the Senate presidency, and he is campaigning hard.

Senator Kalu is a two-term Governor and a high-ranking Senate member who has held critical positions in the National Assembly.

He possesses the necessary skills and national connections to lead the 10th Senate.

His candidacy is notable for coming from a region widely thought to have experienced significant political marginalization.

The South East was underrepresented in key posts in President Muhammadu Buhari's administration, which has resulted in various forms and stages of protest.

Will the Bola Tinubu presidency address perceived anomalies in key positions in the country by ensuring Orji Uzor Kalu clinch the senate presidency?

Aside from the need to appease all regions of the country and ensure equitable representation that fosters national cohesion, Nigeria is maturing to the point where citizens are demanding good governance and credible representation rather than ceding key national positions to individuals in other to appease a sectional interest.

Finally, the battle for Senate leadership is expected to intensify in the coming days, but Nigerians will hope that the various lawmakers representing them will elect a credible legislator who has the capacity and ability to act as a check on the executive arm of government.
