•Barau to run as Deputy Senate President

Three of the Senators-elect eyeing the presidency of the 10th Senate billed for inauguration in June, 2023, yesterday night stepped down for one of the strong contenders for the position, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

The trio, who jettisoned their ambition after a two-hour close-door meeting with re-elected Senators from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Ebonyi State Governor’s Lodge at Asokoro, Abuja, are former Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume; Chairman of Senate Appropriation Committee, Senator Jubrin Barau and outgoing Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi.

They told journalists after the meeting that a consensus candidate in the person of former governor of Akwa Ibom state, Senator Godswill Akpabio, was agreed upon in the interest of peace and national interest.

According to Ndume, “We have all deferred to our brother to fly the flag of the APC as Senate President of the 10th National Assembly. We know he has the capacity to lead the Red Chamber of the federal legislature.”

They also told reporters that the meeting resolved to present Barau as the Deputy President of the next National Assembly.

In his speech, Akpabio thanked his colleagues for the confidence reposed in him and assured that he would not let the legislators down in his bid to move the National Assembly to the next level.

Another meeting of Akpabio and his team with new APC Senators also held at Frazier Suites in Abuja.

At the time of filing in the story, the meeting was expected to be briefed by Akpabio about his candidature and the resolution of his colleagues to work with him.

There's absolutely no excuse why the South East shouldn't get the senate presidency, unless Orji Kalu is not in good relationship with Tinubu, which I suspect. If Orji hadn't won his election, we would have been hearing how Igbos sabotaged themselves and have deprived themselves of the opportunity for SP, so what's the excuse this time around??

They are just too myopic to see the bigger picture. One of my colleague swore with everything he has that Akpabio joined APC because he was threatened with EFCC prosecution. Today, same Akpabio having served as a federal minister is on the verge of becoming the next Senate president.

Akwa ibom gave APC more vote than any South East State

It's just fair Akpabio becomes the Senate President

How does Akpabio being Ssenate president help you or your immediate family or community or state?….you guys waste a lot of time supporting bad choices.

The same way una praise Lawan, his tenure is over with nothing to write home about but trillions of debt.
Now supporting the same Akpabio that just finished as a minister with nothing to show but sharing Ghana must go bag. He has a case with EFCC for embezzling billions of Naira.

What’s really wrong with una?.

Is it from the voters who we're selecting an SP from? So why should the fact that APC had a low vote count from there prevent geopolitical balancing from being effected?

Low vote means South East are not in support of the new administration

You can't put a region that doesn't believe in an Administration in Lawmaking and Legislative position to make policy for same Government without expecting conflicts of intrest

I know it is Akpabio, he really worked hard for Tinubu in Akwaibom, APC came second with good number of votes especially in his Ikot Ekpene Senatorial zone.

OUK intentionally voided his vote to BAT and posted it to mock him, his switch to Lawan was so embarrassing.

Can you tell us the contribution of Kalu or the South East in general to Tinubu's Victory?
It's time to let the SE know that they can't abuse and insult everyone and expect to reap where they did not sow.
The SE only deserves minister of state in this administration.

Jonathan is not powerful bro. If you know Jona story, you’ll understand he’s just a gracious human.

He was a Deputy Gov in Bayelsa, something happened to the Gov and he eventually became the Gov..

He was a Vp, something happened to the President then he became the president..

He became all those things without alliance.

Jonathan really made a mistake! He’s a good man but the people that surrounded him took his kindness for weakness! They spoilt his Government entirely!

Everyone was just using the avenue to loot cuz crude was still selling at a high price then... He said it himself that *I didn’t know I had no friends until after my tenure*

What is the reason for the choice? Atleast they disregarded the South East as usual.

we all know it's cos tinubu picked him this is why buhari is different from the one that likes to claim he made everybody and nobody made him.

I expected this to happen and Akpabio has been loyal to Asiwaju right from the primaries. OUK channels TV outburst about power staying in the North if the APC won’t zone to the SE and his romance with Ahmed Lawan dented his Chances coupled with the voting partner in his senatorial district (he won but BAT couldn’t even get up to 100 votes in his district). Funny enough he might not even get the position of the senate leader smiley grin
