OP is right in choosing not to become born-again in his state as following God requires a lot of self-discipline and self-control in order to live one's life in continuous submission and obedience to the teachings and commandments of Jesus Christ. Those who fail risk eternity in damnation. So, OP's strategy of staying away is the best for him, however, I don't know why he bothers himself about God even at that.
