If El-rufai is in the same position like buhari,he will do same. See you can't just remove fuel subsidy over night. it's impractical at that time without having functional refineries to supply our domestic needs. If any government tried it, it will have affect our economy and our people will suffer. Thank God dangote's refinery is coming on before the end of the month. Now is time to remove it by the incoming government as long as dangote's refinery is working since our shameless leaders can't fix our four refineries over the years.

Removing subsidy is not the main contender but how to improve the purchasing power of the the country currency (Naira) which is being devalued to favour the rich. If by tomorrow it is removed the govt would come out again to tell the Nation that petrol is still being subsidized because of frequent devaluation of the Nation currency. God help Nigeria. Our Politicians are not honest.

That is the truth. . Another govt will still come out in next 2 years and tell us they are subsidizing this and that. . They are not honest and are criminals.

Buhari has outlived his usefulness! In the coming days, weeks, months … he will begin to hear the truth about himself from the mouths of the people he thought were his allies.

He will go back to his cows and no one will visit him! During election season, no one will visit him as an elder statesman, he will receive no invitation to the global stage. He will be a very lonely man

Petrol subsidy is one of the few things the common man enjoys in Nigeria.

If the APC government was against removing subsidy during the boom days of the Nigeria economy and when it was even better to absorb the shock. They should keep up with that same energy even now for the good of the common man.

Removing subsidy now, with the high inflation and unemployment will cause more anarchy.

The APC government must start cutting cost by looking inwards; show sincerity with reducing cost of governance and corruption in government. That's the only way people will be at least willing to give up cheap petrol.

Make this dwarf go rest.

Cos you don't buy fuel with your money that's why you're saying this nonsense, instead of you to tell this government to fix the refineries we have before removing fuel subsidy, you're here saying rubbish.

You should have ask if it made sense to remove subsidy without a functional refinery?

Then ask again if it will make sense if subsidy is remove n cost of living rise by x2?

Re: El-Rufai: Buhari Frustrated Fuel Subsidy Removal by Reference(m): 12:12pm On May 10, 2023
He refused to remove it because he knew there is scant accountability in his government.
He knows if resources are not wasted on subsidies they will likely be wasted elsewhere.
More money to government has never translated to a better economy for Nigerians.

Has all the money spent on so called social investment programs moved the needle of misery away from the red zone of extreme poverty.. no.
Has all the money spent on so called agriculture subsides reached the food markets to lay a glove on inflation.... no.
Has all the so called school feeding reduced the number of out of school kids or the literacy levels.... no.
Has all the money spent on vocationals created jobs or dented the massive unemployment rate..... no.

So what does government spend money on that makes or will make (in future) Nigeria a better place....
No single citizen can say and vouch for.

Both Tinubu, GEJ, Obasanjo, Buhari, El-rufai, Dino etc dey meet for our back dey drink beer together

we are just pawns in their hand, until we get sense.

Am not surprised.

Every Nigerian leader knows subsidy issa scam. But they cannot remove it because at the end it means high fuel prices and by extension high food prices...and once you touch someone's food, there would be riots. Nothing to stop that.

So the scam continued because the 'poor' were benefiting from it....allegedly.

Meanwhile we sacrificed domestic refining to maintain the scam. We sacrifiiced financial security to maintain the scam...because poor people have to 'benefit'.

Buhari is just the latest in a long line of Nigerian leaders who have sabotaged subsidy removal.

Anyway, Tinubu may remove it, and I hope he has the courage to do so. (Obi and Atiku, should either of them take over, will also remove it.).Because, no matter how many times we cry poverty...subsidy is not sustainable. We either pay for fuel at the market price at the pump....or we lie to ourselves, and pay N50 for one liter, while our government pays on our behalf at IMF HQ and Bank of China HQ....at their terms...for our fuel. cheesy

Got to get going. Good morning.
You said a number of things I disagree with but of interest to me the most is your point about subsidy stifling local refining. Subsidy shouldn't stiffle local refining because it has no connection to it. Subsidy is all about reducing the price of what the people buy.

The question, why is it so difficult to make our refineries work? This silly subsidy regime will automatically fizzle out if all our refineries are fixed and working optimally. The way we think upside down in this country is alarming. Putting the horse before the cat. Let the right thing be done and subsidy will definitely fizzle out. Dey swear for us in this country not to use common sense at all. Was it not because we are taking crude oil to refine outside that necessitated paying to subsidize the refined pms. Get the refineries operational and the whole noise will fly away but since many of them are benefiting from the subsidy regime, to say the truth become so difficult for them and even the citizens that suppose to think well because of its adverse effect on them, are also thinking in the direction of their oppressors.
For now, subsidy has not been removed and people are finding it difficult to meet up with daily routine to keep body and soul together. By the time subsidy is removed, the attendant effects will be bigger than desired. Or is it not the person that fed well that will go to school or ply good roads. Even the hospital they are proposing to use the subsidy residue to build, will be full of people they think they are building them to save because people that cannot feed well are bound to be diseased. Crime rate will also be at alarming rate.
Let the first thing be done before the second. Revamp the refineries and make them work optimally and we are out of the mess.

Now it's subsidy removal.

As much as I don't like the killings going on in Kaduna, I must say that El rufai really did well as minister in Abuja and even as governor he has performed well

I know Tinubu to understand the country especially hike in price of what Nigerians hold dear without alternative, am afraid will be catastrophic even it's a good thing to do but Nigerians will make such a leader a scapegoat by revolting against him.

Also trust the opposition to capitalize on this to campaign against govt whereas it can't do otherwise unless it want to continue with the criminal act by retaining it in exchange for power.

God help Nigeria!!!

APC is a made of clowns. Goodluck Jonathan removed subsidy but APC ganged up with their benefactors to sabotage the economy of Nigeria. They held Nigeria under ransom till Goodluck brought sudsidy back.

Now same clowns are talking about subsidy removal. Even Buhari once said there is nothing like subsidy, but he has been spending trillions for 8 years on subsidy he believes does not exist.

8 years has been wasted. If they allowed Goodluck to remove subsidy, they won't be talking the babablu bulabu they are taiking now.

Na them be this👎 none of them is protesting nor on the streets shutting down the economy throughout buharis 8years ..in fact banky still went to join the same pdp to contest..

Re: El-Rufai: Buhari Frustrated Fuel Subsidy Removal by OBA2503: 8:09am On May 11, 2023
Subsidy is a scam because the greatest beneficiaries are the northern oligarchs who have held on to the oil and gas industry like a leech.
Right from the upstream to the downstream sector, the participation of northern elites and clusters of southern barons have been fleecing the country dry. You find they are the owners of thousands of oil tanks, tankers, trucks, oil wells, oil servicing companies, vessels, ships etc.

They control the NNPC and its subsidiaries and President Buhari who was the former PTF chairman and also serving as the Minister of Petroleum is also aware of all the shady dealings going on in the petroleum sector. His claim is because he doesn't want the masses to suffer but the greater worry is he is afraid of what will happen if the northern oligarch don't continue to get access to the free money they have been getting from the oil industry.

Every day, over 60,000 tankers of petroleum products are being discharged from the Apapa and Tin Can Island ports and 60% of this products are sold outside the country in places like Sudan, Niger, Guinea, Cameroun, Mali, Benin Republic, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Chad where the petrol, diesel or kerosene are sold for double or triple the price.

This is how the elites of Nigeria make their money by enjoying the nations natural resources at the detriment of the so called masses they claim to be protecting.

The truth is Nigeria should look more like Dubai or at worst Libya during the Gadaffi era but these elites since 1960 are a close circuit cabal of ex-Generals, petroleum ministers, shady business moguls and politicians who continue to steal the country dry at the people's detriment.

I can mention names but am sure if we stop at least 1000 tankers at the Lagos toll gate and demand the names of their owners, we will have 50% of the culprits who are perpetuating evil against the countries progress.

President Buhari is selfish. These guys are only concerned about their own welfare and not the greater good.
Let's hope Tinubu can shake the table and uproot the gangrenous parasites sucking the life out of these countries. I fear we are about to experience the greatest fight for the soul of this country in the next 4 years.
And, I was convinced that Peter Obi could never have had the liver, gumption or will power to face these money bags cos Peter na boy boy and like they say, If you can't beat them, you join them just like Jonathan had to compromise with all his good intentions.

If power pass you, e pass you.
