As the National Youth Service Corps marks its 50th anniversary, we look back at some throwback photos of Nigerian celebrities like Davido, Taaooma, Cee - C and others in their NYSC uniforms.

The required one-year compulsory service from graduates of tertiary institutions to their fatherland came into existence through Decree 24 of May 22, 1973, which stated that the NYSC is being established with the proper encouragement and development of common ties among Nigerian youths and the promotion of national unity.

The NYSC scheme was established in an effort to rebuild, reconcile, and reconstruct the country following the Nigerian Civil War.

Sunday, June 30th 1974. Footage of the special ceremony at which the first group of participants in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were discharged at passing out parade held at Zaria Racecourse.

The NYSC program was made up of university graduates called up for one year's community service. It was created the previous year by the Military Head of State General Yakubu Gowon and was modelled on the American Peace Corps established by Presideny John F. Kennedy.

Each corps memer took an oath before being presented with a certificate by Brigadier Abba Kyari, the Military Governor of the North Central State. The corps members took an oath of allegiance before they were presente with their certificates of discharge by State Military Govenor.

A message from the Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, was read by the Governor. General Gowon praised the corps as "worthy sons of Nigeria" who had brought "a new revolution in the service of young people" to their country.

One of the objectives of the NYSC scheme is to mobilise labour, and the General said that the markets, local council buildings, roads and bridges they had built would stand as a lasting monument to their dedication and selfless service. The students, who pioneered the scheme, have been invited to make an appraisal of the operation and to set out any suggestions they have for improving it in the future.

The objectives of the scheme are: to inculcate discipline in the young; to raise their moral tone; to develop in them attitudes which will make them more amendable to mobilisation in the national interest; to develop common ties and promote national unity; to encourage them to seek career employment all over the country; to induce employers to employ more readily qualified Nigerians, irrespective of their states of origin; and, lastly, to foster in Nigerians, a spirit of self-reliance.

The second section of the scheme begins on 1st August, 3,070 graduat have been called up to take part."
