The Disadvantages Of Fuel Subsidy: Supporting Tinubu's Decision For A Sustainable Future

By Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah

Nigeria recently witnessed a significant shift in its political landscape as President Tinubu assumed office and promptly announced the cessation of fuel subsidies. Citing the exorbitant cost of over 7 trillion naira annually, Tinubu emphasized the need to redirect these funds towards critical sectors such as security, infrastructure, education, healthcare, job creation, and achieving a unified exchange rate.

While the removal of fuel subsidies has resulted in soaring petroleum product prices, causing hardships for the populace, it is important to consider the drawbacks of subsidies and evaluate how Tinubu's decision aligns with addressing the nation's challenges.

The Disadvantages of Subsidies and the Call for Support:

Subsidies, whether direct or indirect, involve government payments to offset costs incurred by private firms or individuals. While subsidies can serve as effective tools for promoting economic and social objectives, their implementation in Nigeria has raised concerns.

They strain government finances, limiting investments in crucial sectors and hindering economic growth. Therefore, it becomes imperative for the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and citizens to support the removal of fuel subsidies for the following reasons:

Economic Stability and Job Creation:

By supporting the government's decision to end fuel subsidies, the NLC can contribute to long-term economic stability and job creation. The redirection of funds from subsidies to infrastructure development and job creation initiatives will enhance the overall welfare of workers and stimulate economic growth, leading to improved working conditions and increased employment opportunities.

Improved Social Services:

The removal of fuel subsidies allows for the allocation of resources to vital social services such as healthcare and education. By advocating for the elimination of subsidies, the NLC can support the provision of better healthcare facilities and quality education for workers and their families, ultimately enhancing their overall well-being.

Curbing Corruption and Illicit Activities:

Fuel subsidies have been marred by corruption and illicit activities. The price differential between Nigeria and neighboring countries has encouraged smuggling and criminal networks. By eliminating subsidies, the government can promote a transparent and legitimate fuel market, curbing corruption and creating an environment conducive to lawful business practices.

Sustainable Energy Solutions:

The end of fuel subsidies can pave the way for investments in alternative energy sources and promote sustainability. By allowing market forces to determine fuel prices, Nigeria can encourage the development of renewable energy options, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and contributing to environmental conservation. This transition can create new job opportunities in the renewable energy sector and position Nigeria as a leader in sustainable development.

President Tinubu's decision to end fuel subsidies in Nigeria is a bold step towards addressing critical challenges faced by the nation. While the initial increase in petroleum product prices may cause temporary hardships for the populace, the disadvantages of subsidies emphasize the need for their elimination.

By supporting the government's initiative, the Nigerian Labour Congress and citizens can contribute to economic stability, job creation, improved social services, curbing corruption, and fostering sustainable energy solutions. It is through this united front that Nigeria can overcome temporary hardships and achieve long-term prosperity for all its citizens.

Let the Government go after subsidy thieves and get them to vomit what they have swallowed. What have they done with those siphoning crude oil from this country. When after meeting with Tinubu, the NNPL GMD announced the increase in the price for the petrol even though the subsidy should cover till June ending, I knew that the conspiracy against the masses is strong. No wonder they are fighting tirelessly to make sure that Obi doesn't become the President. But God will surely disappoint them.
