The Vice-Chancellor, Alex-Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, Professor Sunday Oge Elom, has inaugurated a Committee on Proper Dressing in the institution, with a charge to inculcate in staff and students the culture of proper and appropriate dressing.

While speaking at the inauguration ceremony,the Vice-Chancellor frowned at the crass lack of decorum in the dress sense of some staff and students, warning that the University will not condone nudity and other forms of indecency in the name of dressing, especially on campus and during official hours.

He stressed that the Committee was put in place to curtail the dress excesses of some staff and students on campus, noting that there are different dresses for different occasions, and urged the concerned persons to abide by that globally-accepted norm.

Still speaking, the Vice-Chancellor who was represented at the event by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Professor Romanus Ejiaga said that apparels such as transparent dresses, dirty jeans with holes or obscene subliminal messages, tattered clothes, baggy and saggy clothing, tight fitting apparels, shirts/tops and caps with obscene write-ups that suggest membership of a secret cult, Shirts/tops and caps with obscene write-ups bearing obnoxious/ seductive inscription, complete covering of faces with very dark glasses and face caps, piercing of body and tattooing, wearing of neck chains and nose rings by students, extremely bogus hair or coloured artificial hair, artificial dreadlocks, fixing of long nails as well as fixing of long eyelashes, and all other forms of indecent trousers and short skirts and blouses would not be tolerated in the University Premises.

He noted that a fine of 10,000 naira per offence or outright expulsion of any student caught in contravention of the policy, adding that any staff caught contravening or acting contrary to the policy will face the Staff Disciplinary Committee.

Speaking on behalf of members of the Committee, the Chairman, Dr. Arua Oko Omaka, assured that they would put measures in place to ensure that the image of the University is protected at all times, as improper dressing sends a bad signal to visitors of the University.

He reiterated that academic certificates are awarded in character and learning, and called on the Deans of Faculties, Directors, Heads of Academic and Administrative Departments, University Security Officials and the Students’ Union Government (SUG) to join hands with the Committee to rid the University of improper dressing.

Concluding, Dr. Oko noted that with the support of the Vice-Chancellor, the Committee would achieve its mandate.
