Vice-Chancellor, Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, recently met with Students Union Government (SUG), Dean, and Assistant Dean, Students’ Affairs and some officers of the University Parents’ Forum at VC’s Conference Room to address the issue of improper and inappropriate dressing among students in the University.

At the meeting, VC expressed dismay over the poor dressing attitude of some of the students and posited that indecent dressing has been outlawed in the University and so no student is expected to go unpunished if found guilty, as the rule takes care of that. He noted that it had come to the notice of the University management that some of the students do not dress properly, stating that his main concern and reason for convening the meeting was to address the issue.

Prof. Nwajiuba made it clear that there are dress codes for every occasion, for which people are usually identified. He stated that for students to wear sports dresses, swimming trunks, torn jean trousers, slippers and all manner of unsuitable wears to lectures, while on campus and even off campus can no longer be tolerated, and therefore called for opinions on way out of the situation, emphasizing that “the way you dress, is the way you are addressed”.

Responding, SUG President, Comrade Chima Chijioke Solomon said that SUG would organize sensitization programmes to address the anomalies, and lecturers should also be involved in this, by addressing the matter in their lecture halls and possibly penalize any student who comes to class not properly dressed.
Dean, Students’ Affairs, Dr. Otu Otu Akanu, said that enlightenment on the issue was necessary and that proper dressing would be one of the topics during the orientation programme for freshmen.
Assistant Dean, Students’ Affairs, Mrs Chiaka Nnodum reiterated the need for posters and banners to provide sufficient information to students on the importance of proper dressing. VC directed Mrs Nnodum to organize programmes on the subject matter, for female students and staff, as the matter concern them most.
In conclusion, Prof. Nwajiuba told the students’ representatives that University Management would not stand by and watch any of the students damage the image of the University, especially as the school is gaining more popularity, nationally and internationally, adding that he would personally visit the classrooms on routine check on their dressing and any of them found not properly dressed, would be sent out of the class and punished.
