The Nigeria Inter-Religious Council on Friday maintained the secularity of the country, saying no religion is superior to the other.

While affirming that Nigeria is a multi-religious state under God, the organisation called on religious leaders to resist political manipulation of religion that could lead to anarchy.

NIREC made the submissions in a joint statement by the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Daniel Okoh and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammed Sa’ad Abubakar.

The NIREC co-chairmen said they were disturbed by the ugly trend occasioned by the hate speeches before and after the 2023 elections.

The statement said, “Weaponizing religion for selfish, political gains is capable of causing religious conflict in Nigeria. NIREC therefore condemns, in strongest terms, the statements that give the impression that one religion is superior to the other. NIREC affirms that Nigeria is a multi-religious state under God.

“NIREC condemns statements that give the impression of religious dominance and superiority in the country. We wish however that every Nigerian could be a true Christian or a true Muslim as that would promote the religious values that could transform the nation. Given that most politicians in Nigeria practice one religion or the other, the Christian and Muslim politicians should proclaim the fear and love of God by caring for the common good and welfare of the citizens.

“NIREC calls on religious leaders to resist political manipulation of religion that could lead to anarchy. We condemn the antics of politicians whose main goal is to achieve their political interest by whatever means possible including using religion as a cover. NIREC calls on our political leaders to use their platforms to sue for peace, unity and harmony while also refraining from making statements or comments that are capable of aggravating the already heated polity in the nation.

“NIREC calls upon all politicians to play politics with the fear of God, dignity, honour and decorum by eschewing the politics of division and sectionalism. NIREC appeals to the general public to note that the elections are over and various cases are in court challenging the outcome and must therefore give the judiciary the opportunity to do its work.

“Nigerians must continue to be patriotic, law- abiding and peace-loving and must oppose all acts of machinations and manipulations by leaders who are using religion to tear the nation apart. Let us pray for a nation that will continue to promote justice and peaceful co-existence. The task of building a prosperous Nigeria is the task of every citizen. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria!”

Christianity is a way of life and not a religion. On this premise, they might be right.

In reality of life issues, one is superior in constitution and law, the other is superior to the point it doesn't permit the first.

Wash! Buhari have long elevate ethno-religious supremacist agenda with political Islam as a state religion reflecting in appointment, unchallenged widespread atrocities by terrorists/enemies of state and political pyschophants spreading inflammatory statements without the instrument of state arresting or prosecuting them(former governor El-Rufai, and the fanatic Kano cleric are perfect example).

I expect CAN to leave religion aside and defend just the Christian faith.
Christian leaders overtime turned Christianity into a religion as against Christ's intention. The word Christian loosely translates to mean 'Christ-like'. In its true form, Christianity should be just an army of saved people with the decision to follow Christ's teachings and live like him. Jesus frowned upon religion, regularly deriding the Pharisees and the Sadducees, the major players of religion at that time. Every religion is a tool for controlling people, yet Christ through God Almighty has given us liberty!
In heaven, God wouldn't request for religion before admitting anyone to eternal life.

Issue of religion should be personal and no one should impose their own on others.

Sadly some people think otherwise, those are the same people who killed Deborah, Kidnapped Leah, killing people in southern Kaduna, Benue state, plateau, they head all the security agencies and they forced a same religion ticket for presidency and vice on Nigerians.

They declare anyone who stops them from causing havoc a rebel or terrorist like they did MNK and Igboho, they stopped people from exercising their civil rights on election day, I can go on and on...

Where are the murderers of Deborah?

Surah 3:151 gave the murderers the motivation to strike.

The truth is always bitter, when you have international enemies wanting to destroy Nigeria from within due to our National resources, for their globalization agenda of one world government.

RELIGION is the funniest deceit in the history of this earth.
This earth is over 4.5billions years old.
Christianity is over 2000yrs old
Islam is just over 1400yrs old.
The oldest religion in top religions; Hinduism is like 4000yrs old.
So why didn't God create religion since 4.5 billion years ago?
Can God just realised we need religion 4000yrs ago?
So nobody should fool themselves, Religion is Man made.

The Muslims thinks they're the superior

However, these two spends the whole time fighting the traditional gods... The traditional religion has being here before them and that's a given.

Mikegem:
Religion is the number one reason for Nigeria's underdevelopment

Actually, Nigeria is underdeveloped because we are a resource dependent country.

We sell our resources and use the revenue to import. This has the effect of stifling industrial development and as a result, job creation. Also, we lose money than we earn it, meaning we become poor.

We also subsidise power, until recently fuel, education, and a host of other things...which while helping the poor, means that the power sector in particular cannot fund itself adequately, meaning that as a result, we don't have enough capacity for industrial development.

All the developed nations became developed when they were 'religious'....because from around the 18th century they realized that their population was fast outgrowing the ability of being 'a peasant farming nation' to support them. They had to solve the problem of feeding themselves adequately...hence industrial revolution. It is only in the last 60 years that they have become irreligous.

The minute we realize that our resources are not enough, we would make the choice to become an industrial nation and then we can truly develop...and at the end as a side effect, the country may become less religious. But we prefer to sell raw materials and import goods whose value exceeds our revenue, we prefer to use oil money for everything including things that by right should be funded by taxation, and thus we remain underdeveloped.
