To run a bank, like any other business, there's a basic capital you must have. That capital is measured according to the dollar rate at any given time.

Over the years, seeing how naira has fallen drastically, most of the banks have lost their basic capital. A lot have merged with others because they couldn't keep the shop open anymore. The existing banks as of this moment, will have to gear up to increase their capital base from the previous amount, if they want to stay in business.

That means, more banks are going to fold up and be merged into others. Same way Diamond banks staffs across the Nation lost jobs when the bank merged with Access, is the same way more people are going to lose their jobs in the banks that will fold up.

Thanks.

You must be a Bible student. This was an extract from the statement of Rehoboam Son of Solomon when he replied the isrealites about the burden and taxes Solomon put on them after his death, that he should make them light ..but he replied them foolishly...not taken heed to the advice of the elders..

Recapitalization plans for Nigerian banks

Summary of the above text

The CBN's recapitalization plan was announced in June 2019 as part of a five-year plan to elevate Nigerian banks to the top 500 globally.

The objective of recapitalization is to ensure that Nigerian banks maintain a high level of capital and liquid assets to minimize the impact of economic crises on the financial system.

The leading deposit money banks in Nigeria, including Zenith Bank, Access Holdings, UBA, GTCo, FBN Holdings, Fidelity Bank, Unity Bank, and Union Bank, witnessed a 17.8% increase in total assets in Q1 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.

Among these banks, Access Holdings emerged as the largest in terms of asset size, followed by Zenith Bank, ETI, UBA, and FBN Holdings.

In comparison, the leading bank in South Africa, Standard Bank Group, had assets of around $170.9 billion in 2022.

The CBN acknowledges that the capital base of Nigerian commercial banks has been eroded by about $4.5 billion since the 2005 recapitalization, mainly due to the devaluation of the national currency.

The CBN has been considering the modalities and framework for recapitalization for some time, indicating that it is becoming increasingly necessary to strengthen the banking sector.

All they want to tell you guys in that long epistle is that they want foreigners to buy up Nigerian banks and now set predatory rules by which poor Nigerians will be exploited....Nigerians will suffer till they walk and drop dead on the streets....APC is and has always been an IMF/World Bank vehicle of destabilization...IMF/World Bank now rules Nigeria and Nigerians will suffer.
