Doumbouya came to power through a coup d'état on September 5, 2021, which led to the overthrow of the previous president, Alpha Condé. As a member of the Guinean Special Forces Group, Doumbouya dissolved the government and constitution through a televised broadcast on the day of the coup. He was subsequently inaugurated as interim president on October 1, 2021.
