NDLEA Launches Crackdown On Nitrous Oxide Abuse Amidst Rising Abuse By Youths by Antvt23: 9:25am On Jul 12, 2023
In light of the surging misuse of nitrous oxide, popularly known as laughing gas, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a directive for an immediate, nationwide crackdown on its illegal sale and consumption. This resolute action, which demonstrates the agency's commitment to the well-being of the population, comes amidst a wave of recreational users who are abusing this substance.

Mohamed Buba Marwa, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, has ordered all branches, commands, and formations of the agency to launch this offensive against the abuse of nitrous oxide promptly. This crackdown aims to curb the unauthorized use and sale of this substance, thus combating its alarming misuse across the country.

The decision and its immediate implementation were communicated to the public through a statement from Mr. Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media and Advocacy at the NDLEA, on a Tuesday press release.

The decision to take such a strict measure against those involved in the illegal sale and abuse of nitrous oxide stems from an in-depth analysis of the substance's harmful effects on its abusers. The documented side effects include disorientation, dizziness, headaches, lightheadedness, fainting spells, hallucinations, unconsciousness, and suffocation due to oxygen deficiency, among other neurological and especially psychiatric complications.

Nitrous oxide, a colorless gas traditionally utilized for its sedative and analgesic properties, has unfortunately found a place in recreational use. People seeking intoxication have started misusing this medical gas. The method involves emptying the gas into balloons and inhaling it, inducing a temporary state of euphoria or happiness.

The NDLEA’s alarming report from 2021 revealed that more than 40% of Nigerian youth, ages 18-35, are deeply engaged in drug abuse, with nitrous oxide being one of the substances of choice. The dangers associated with inhaling the gas are profound and extend beyond immediate health risks, leading to potential brain damage and mental illness.

The NDLEA's new crackdown is therefore a crucial step towards safeguarding public health, particularly targeting the youth who are most at risk. As the agency sets about tackling the illegal sale and abuse of nitrous oxide, this enforcement action serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with drug abuse and the need for collective effort in the war against it. The NDLEA's resolute action also underscores the agency's unwavering commitment to combating drug abuse and protecting Nigeria's future generations.
