Enyeama has been inactive since 2018, but his long-standing African record remains intact following Mweene’s retirement.

Vincent Enyeama will keep his record as Africa’s top-scoring goalkeeper after Kennedy Mweene retired from professional football.

Mweene announced his retirement from professional football after over an 18-year-long career that began in 2003.

Mweene retires from football
Although he never played outside of Africa, Mweene was famous for his maverick style of goalkeeping and flamboyant celebrations.

However, aside from his maverick style, Mweene was also a goalscoring goalkeeper during his playing career.

The former Zambia star is one of the highest-goalscoring goalkeepers in the history of the beautiful game, having scored 13 goals.

Mweene scored 11 goals for Free State Stars, all from the penalty spot and two for Zambia, including an equaliser against Nigeria at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Enyeama remains Africa's number one
However, despite scoring a lot of goals, the award for most goals scored by an African goalkeeper belongs to Enyeama.

Enyeama scored 24 goals during his career, although he never scored one for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

The former Nigeria international scored all of his goals from the penalty spot, including 13 for Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Enyeama also scored another ten goals during his time at Enyimba and one for Akwa Ibom Stars.

The ex-Super Eagles shot-stopper is one of the top-goalscoring goalkeepers in history, although he is way behind Rogério Ceni, who is number one with 131 goals.

Enyeama retired from international football in 2015 before quitting football fully in 2020. He made 101 appearances for Nigeria.

This enyeama is a living legend!

I didn't know he has a good scoring goal record!

Our national team coach should look more in our local leagues. There's abundance of human capital there.

The likes of enyema, osimhen, chukwueze and co weren't born and raised in Europe
