Let's be honest; when we think of Agriculture, most times, the first thing that comes to mind is farming. And for farming, it’s usually this scenario, “A man goes to his plot of land, he weeds it, applies fertiliser or manure, and plants the seeds”, - at this point, we are envisioning the hoes, cutlass, tractors, and other farm equipment used on the farm. Now back to our scenario, “the seeds planted by the man (our farmer) have germinated into different crops which are ready to be harvested and then sold to the public for consumption.” however, do you know that farming does more than just provide food for consumption?

Farming is a powerful tool for environmental sustainability. If farmers embrace eco-friendly farming practices, they can protect soil health, conserve water, and reduce carbon emissions. There are several projects aimed at sustaining the environment; for example, the Nigerian government launched a tree planting project in November 2022 called “Project 250k” I also know of the Green Legacy Project by QNET, with reforestation efforts and raising awareness about the importance of the environment.

So next time you think of farming, remember it is not just about producing food for consumption. In fact, those who can should delve into farming to contribute to positively impacting our environment and maintaining a balanced ecosystem.
