Select any random African country and give it to any random western European country to manage for 50 years and watch 70% of their current problems magically disappear.

South Africa was once a beautiful and efficient country.

True!!! Look at the entire continent, it’s natural resources and wealth. It’s undeveloped potential and you’ll give up on hope for Africa and its blacks before the rest of the world!

Let's blame Mandela for all this.
If we in Nigeria were still under the white, there won't b ethic war ,bandit or pipe line vandalism. We would b developed than South Africa.
the problem though is that we can't be under white rule forever. Even if whites or Asians colonise us again, they will still leave again one day. We must learn to live like 21st century humans live. We owe it to ourselves

Blame Mandela for the failure of the leaders he imposed on them...? undecided

Greed is the issue with African leaders.

Kill greed in Africa and watch it soar.

the continent is truly blessed. But we the inhabitants are more concerned with personal aggrandisement than collective progress.
People say it is their turn to be President here because they want to corner resources to their own section

personal greed too. The British were greedy but they were greedy for the betterment of their people, while our leaders want to live in mansions and benzes even if the rest of their people can't eat properly

Biafra would have been an exception and game changer forAfrica like Rwanda is trying to be, Biafra would have been a space power, nuclear power, medical power and of course military power. I have very little doubts that Nigeria and south Africa is in desperate need of a miracle but my biggest headache is why countries that should emerge and change the narratives are being stippled

And Abia with all its revenues has one of the dirtiest cities in Nigeria? Alex otti cleaned some places after taking swearing in and by 3 days the same places were filled with dirt.
You see baba, from Maiduguri down to calabar to Lagos up to Sokoto, all of us no well for this country

The clean up of Aba doesn't mean Aba is not thriving it simply means sanitation sector is not working optimally, Aba is the largest shoe manufacturing hub in Africa, Aba is the capital of SME in Nigeria, Aba is the first city to get approval for an independent power station. Aba I'd not a state capital or federal capital but has recorded the level of industrial growth independent of federal and state government support

South Africa was once a beautiful and efficient country.

The problem with Africa is something I will get to, but first, a word on South Africa.

South Africa was once 2 countries....the white side and the black side. During arphateid, the white side was well developed and got more government spending and money. The black side was poorly developed and got less government money, and so forth. And looked like an underdeveloped country.

What black majority rule has brought is that government spending has been extended to the black majority. As a result, government spending is now thin for everyone, and the country is looking underdeveloped

Also, white people did not spend as much on education as they did on themselves for black people. Result, an underdeveloped black majority.

So, why is Africa underdeveloped

1. We are resource dependent

Government revenue in many developed countries relies heavily on taxes. Everywhere collects taxes, and at high tax rates. As a result, the government exchequer has money for good infrastructure.

African countries rely on one raw material or several raw materials that they are selling.

Here in Nigeria 80% of our revenue comes form oil money....

In 2014, oil was 100 dollars per barrel, in 2016, it was as low as 30 dollars per barrel, in 2017, it was around 60, 2019, 80, 2020, 24 dollars per barrel, 2021, 91, 2022, 100,now 80.

With that kind of revenue pattern, is that stable? No, so we take loans to meet up.

It is the same thing with South Africa. Replace oil with diamonds, platinium, etc....and a low tax to gdp (better than Nigeria)....and the result is limited government revenue.

2.Poor tax income

Countries like France, Germany, and the UK have tax to gdp revenues of 45-50%. Nigeria is at 10%, South Africa is at 24%. Ghana too.

At the end, that is not enough money at all for development and government running...so we take loans and more loans

3. No manufacutring base at all

Japan was once a nation of villages and farmers, ditto China, and ditto South korea. Today, they are first world naitons. What changed? They used their brains to develop industries.

Here in Africa, we don't want to develope industries, and we do not want to make things...even phone.

4. Subsidies, subsidises

We spend a lot of our income on subsides...which in some instances limit profit in the subsidised sectors, and prevent overall growth. Here in Nigeria we subsidise power, and even place price controls on power. At the end, since the sector cannot make enough money, we don't have power to power industries.

If you want development, sort our the above.

you are talking of individuals. I am talking about government.
Aba is a rich city that has nothing to show for it, courtesy of its leaders. Its not the only city thus neglected in Nigeria nay Africa.

I agree. We need to send leaders to leadership courses in Asia for a few months before swearing in because NONE of them understands the import of any of the things you listed.
As smart as Tinubu is, I can tell you now that he knows absolutely nothing about the type of leadership that leads to developed societies. I have also not seen one past Nigerian leader that does.

Your submission is revealing. But, may I ask, what's your opinion about the current economic reform by President Tinubu, and the subsidy removal especially?

Stop typing nonsense. Despite it's incompetencies,Nigeria with the same time frame has achieved 100x more than what the British did during it's rule.
South Africa wasn't the typical colonial case.
The whites have settled there for centuries,it was their homeland, hence why they utilized it's resources in developing there and not Europe. Had it been same scenario in yours, and they're still ruling,it's still their settlements that would been developed while your case would likely be worse off than it is now, coupled with intense discrimination.

There is nothing inherently wrong with Africans, we only just started governing ourselves so we are just trying to figure things out.

Our leaders still think corruption is the way to go.

But on every indices, Africa is rising. Things are bad but it is getting better FAST. compare the statistics now with that of 60 years ago and you will see remarkable progress despite the ups and downs.

Almost every other country in the list of top ten largest economies had centuries if not thousands of years as headstart.

That's the problem with south east, always chest beating.

Go to their states everywhere is refuse dumping on the road. They are naturally dirty with bad roads everywhere.

Are they telling us states like Akwa ibom and Cross river don't eat? why are we not dumping refuse indiscriminately on the road.

They think when someone does buying and selling the person is wise. Even the buying and selling they are hardly truthful in their dealings. They can dupe you and feel it is smartness.

The truth is that we Africans don't like facing reality. We want everything done for us instead of doing it ourselves. We believe it's our right to have everything with ease instead of working for it. They say no pain, no gain but we say no gain, no way.
