Explosives Import: Enugu Investigates Use of Chime's Name

Enugu State Government has begun investigation on why importers of a container
of explosives intercepted by the Nigeria Customs Service at Tin Can Island Port
recently decided to inscribe the Governor's name, Sullivan Chime, on some
cartons.

Although, other names were found in some of the cartons of the explosives,
the state government, an inside source told THISDAY wants to find out those
behind the crime and their motive.

Specifically, the state government wants to know whether the crime was
masterminded by political enemies of the Governor.

Although, the state government had issued a statement denying link to the
offensive cargoes, the Governor is said to be interested in finding out the
rationale behind the use of his name.

It was gathered that Chime is eager that the culprits behind the importation
of the explosives are apprehended to answer questions on the inscription of
his names and others on the cartons of explosives.

The Tin Can Customs Service had recently announced the interception of the
explosives during an examination.

The Command said it arrested the agent behind the importation, but
THISDAY gathered that the suspect arrested was a suspected employee of the
company behind the importation.

The company which is supposed to be the declarant as contained in the
manifest, had in its declaration to the customs, used a different company
with a different address, a building at Isolo, Lagos, under renovation.

The Command has been reluctant releasing the name of the agent it said was
arrested, a woman, in what a source explained was because she is just a
suspected employee.

When our Correspondent visited the Enforcement Unit of the Tin Can Customs
Thursday to get details of the agent arrested in connection with the
importation of the explosives, an officer in the Legal Seat said it was not
proper releasing the name, since she may be innocent of the allegation
