The Super Falcons of Nigeria pulled a star performance against co-host, Australia in the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women's World cup, Newspremises reports.

Super Falcons came from behind to beat the impressive Matildas, who dominated most of the first half.

Nigeria's goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie made some super saves to keep her side in the game, but she could do nothing about Emily Van Egmond in the first minute of first-half stoppage time.

The ball found was able to the striker in the danger area before she coolly slotted a low drive past Nnadozie to put Australia ahead, per Independent.

Nigeria restored parity with the last kick of the second half after Rasheedat Ajibade’s effort was deflected to the path of Uchenna Kanu, who tucked home from close range.

The Super Falcons took the lead courtesy of a Osinachi Ohale header in the 65th minute and then substitute Asisat Oshoala scored a beauty in the 72nd minute to extend the lead for the Africans.

Nigeria endured a late scare as Alanna Kennedy pulled one back for Australia in stoppage time, but it came too little too late.

It ended Nigeria 3-2 Australia.

Super Falcons’ next step

The future of the Super Falcons after their recent victory seems promising. With the win, Nigeria has now claimed the top spot in Group B, securing 4 points from two matches.

Their first match against Canada ended in a goalless draw, but they bounced back with a victorious performance.

Notably, Canada also sits at 4 points, making them strong contenders in the group. Meanwhile, Australia holds 3 points, and the Republic of Ireland lags behind at the bottom with zero points.

The next crucial match for Nigeria is against the Republic of Ireland, scheduled for July 31. A draw in this game will be sufficient to guarantee their qualification to the next round of the tournament.

The Super Falcons will undoubtedly be eager to maintain their momentum and secure a place in the next phase of the competition.
