There is something seriously wrong with the development of SW. This region has largely remained stuck in one place while the rest of the world continues to advance. I saw a picture of Onitsha before independence & it struck me how decent it looked. I then looked at the gory pictures of today's Ibadan and was shocked to discover that Onitsha of 70 years ago is actually better than Ibadan of today.

It's even more worrisome to note that same sorry situation is applicable to Abeokuta, Oshogbo etc. As they say, pictures don't lie. So, I would be uploading the pictures of SE cities of pre independence and current. Also, I would upload cities of SW pre independence and now.

This should be an enlightening thread, complete with pictures and history. This is how we also do it on Quora.

First and second pictures are Onitsha in the 1950's.
Third and fourth pictures are Ibadan of 2023.

First picture is Aba in the 1920's.
Second is Aba currently.

Third picture is Abeokuta in colonial times.

Fourth pictures is that of Abeokuta currently.

From the pictures, you can see how much Aba has evolved. On the other hand, Abeokuta hasn't changed much. They only replaced rafia roof with rusted roofs.

First picture is a street in Enugu in the 1940's.
Second picture is a neighborhood in Enugu recently.

Third picture is Oshogbo in the 1950's.
Fourth picture is Oshogbo recently.

A clear distinction between Igbo cities and Yoruba cities is that the former keeps evolving while the latter remains stagnated.

The first 3 pictures are that of Onitsha prior to independence.

The 4th picture is a typical street in Ibadan today, 2023.

The Ibadan scenario is replicated in other SW cities/towns too. No significant changes noticeable after so many decades!

The most worrisome part is that in another 30 years when most of the world would be living in automated houses, SW towns will still remain rusty.
