Why didn't he wait till July 1st to announce the removal? At least that would have given him the whole of June to put measures in place.

What even made you think the savings from subsidy removal will benefit the average Nigerian? 13th percent derivation for Niger Delta, who did it benefit? except you are a politician, I wonder why you are struggling to defend a corrupt set of people who meant no good for the Nation. Where are all the promises of Buhari in 2015? how many of them did he fulfill?

Abeg, park one side jare'

If he waited, his hands would have been very weak as opponents would have demanded huge terms which the country couldn't afford.

Buhari was a monumental disaster. Also, never put your hope on humans. This includes Tinubu. They are all imperfect (Read Psalms 146:3-4)

The money saved from the subsidy would simply be to reduce the governments borrowing needs.

Imagine if the government was supposed to borrow 15 trillion this year. By removing the subsidy, the government would only need to borrow 5 trillion. That's why Tinubu is being miserly about palliatives and an increase in the minimum wage.

Any increase in spending would mean the FG would have to borrow it. The budget is still in deficit and not in a surplus it can deep its hands into.

Make una enter street...na Jonathan body una for dey get power
The masses on the street are too tribalistic...that is what the politicians are taking advantage of....could you imagine despite all the bullshittt since tinubu came in yet no protest from our artists, actress and actors....where is wole sonyinka?
Jonathan removed subsidy despite the cheap cost of things as at then but the whole nation united and protest
Endsar protest the north didn't join because it will be seen as fighting against their own son( buhari)

It's easier for the big three to unite against a minority president than for the country to unite against a president from any of the big three. So unfortunate. That's the tragedy of Nigeria.

Best NL post in half a decade.

You are the tribal person here! You see things in a tribal light and perceive everyone else will.

So, Nigerians were not tribal when they voted for Jonathan? He won all states of the Southwest except Osun state (Aregbesola was still very popular then) and they did not vote for the ACN candidate Ribadu. You start shouting tribalism when it suits you

Did OBJ not try severally just to increase the price and met great opposition? Is OBJ Ijaw? Was he from a minority tribe like the Chibok? Most Yorubas applauded Oshiomole's frustrations of OBJ's oil price increases.

Jonathan failed to carry the nation along that he would remove the subsidy and deregulate the price. The nation just woke up on January 1st, 2012, with the announcement that the subsidy was gone and price fully deregulated.

Who does that? Where's the wisdom? He should have started sensitizing with stakeholders that he would remove the price after he won the 2011 elections. Heavy consultations with the state governors and stakeholders should have been had on how to end it. Oshiomole who was now a governor realizing his mistake could have reached an agreement with the NLC. I fully supported the deregulation then and now.

OBJ did a very poor job of enlightening the population of the need to end the subsidy and fully deregulate the price. That military man in him preferred to impose things on the citizenry rather than work through consultation. The same Oshiomole who fought him hard upon becoming governor realized that the subsidy was costing the nation dearly and short-changing all 3 tiers of government.

This is 2023. Times are different. It is glaring that the petrol subsidy is adversely affecting the country. Buhari's wasted 8 years has exposed the unaffordability of the subsidy, costing about a quarter to a third of the budget to finance.

Also, Tinubu, Obi and Atiku all stated they would remove it. So, what's the problem here? Is it because it was a Yoruba man that eventually removed it? If it needed to be removed, it should irrespective of who actually did so.
I was patiently waiting for you to extend your analysis to how tinubu sensitized the people before he removed the subsidy but I didn't see anything like that , I see nothing more than double standard at play here.

That left much to be desired of the government's stance. Nawa ooo.

Is government not a continuum? Did Buhari not sensitize the nation about its postponed removal to July 1st, 2023?

Had it been that rather than an increase in price, it was instead a reduction in price to 97 per litre, there would have been jubilations to high heavens in the streets, with overwhelming praise for Tinubu and he would be tagged "a man of the people.".

With all we knew and now know about Tinubu, anybody that expected or is still expecting honesty from Tinubu is deceiving themselves and burying their heads in the sand and WILL be disappointed by Tinubu.

With Tinubu, its a case of Nemo dat quod non habet literally meaning "no one can give what they do not have".

Tinubu has NEVER been honest and will never be honest and so you cannot expect the truth from Tinubu.
