One thing OBJ did that benefits us today is splitting our military command structure so that it's almost impossible for a coup to be planned and executed in Nigeria without news of it spilling out before hand..

That said, the clamor by some political actors for military takeovers, is just another attempt to gain political power on the back of someone else's effort, instead of doing the work of politics themselves..

Buhari could've tried to lead the North out of Nigeria after losing 3 elections, the last one being so badly rigged that the winner, Umar Musa Yaradua, all but admitted it...
Tinubu could've done the same with Lagos and most of the SW, instead of slug it out with PDP from a position of weakness..

Today we have riff-raff nonentities like Igboho and Ekpa trying to drive to power using the lives of young foolish people as fuel..
90% of civil society actors operating in the political advocacy space seem to have no work besides stirring up internal destabilisation, especially in the states where we have a semblance of good governance.. They camp in Lagos and Kaduna, opposing everything the governors there do, but unlook Abia, Oyo, Rivers, Taraba, Benue and all the states that are either failed, failing or run like autocracies..
Useful idiots playing their part to scatter our nation, with the daft notion that the pieces will be rearranged in a way that favors them... They could look to Libya, or Yemen to realise that the pieces of scattered nations, never come back together..

ENDSARS people abandoned the hard work of building a political movement to take the momentum of their protests and channel it in the only legitimate direction of obtaining power... They instead chose the easy route of insurrection, thinking they could chase away over 1000 elected officials with hashtags and emojis. Once more relying on some outside savior like JackTwitter to 'help' them gain power..

The lack of responsibility and awareness will never cease to amaze.

The latest savior is the military..
Grown men hoping that a few, misguided, corrupt soldiers will somehow lead Africa out of our shrunken, shrivelled state and into greatness..
It would be surprising if the same thing had not been attempted just a few months ago with Peetobi..

The truth is that good things take time and effort.. You cannot throw 10 blocks and 2 bags of cement into the air and hope they build themselves into a mansion as they fall down.. You need architects and builders for that, not soldiers or failed politicians promising you heaven when all they've ever built is hell.

Life can be cruel sometimes... She will watch you grow old and die in frustration if you refuse to apply wisdom in your dealings with her..

If by some magic our democracy is toppled by soldiers, very few politcians operating today will lose their jobs, relevance or access... 3 or 4 big names will be dealt with ceremoniously to fool you, but Nigeria is too big for 40 soldiers to run without help.. Politicians will politick and you will be left in the cold, again, except this time the constitution will be suspended along with your fundamental human rights...

My advise... Go and register a company... Go in your hundreds of thousands if not millions.
Apply for these loans.. Seek advice.. Set up businesses.. GROW.. Become financially independent individuals first, then pool your new power together to build political movements, either parties or pressure groups. Use your combined resources to sponsor candidates who you direct to build a sample of the Nigeria of your dreams, using an LGA or 2 as test cases.. Demonstrate this superior governance ability that you claim to possess.. If it works you will win over converts, and your new ideology will turn into a true political movement, based on productivity and a promise of a better life, not on anger, depression, negativity and threats of violence and death..

This is the only real way to gain lasting power... Anything else is a lie.

Good morning.

Any coup effectively takes power back to the tribe that dominates the army. We all know the tribe I am talking about.

He was rejected by the good Nigerian people multiple times until BAT decided to repackage him for his personal ambition. PBAT current reversal of all his poverty policies is evidence of PMB's title as the Failure in Chief

I have never seen a more deranged gaslighters like some of them. Who is calling for a coup? Their judgement of issues baffles me. People are saying Nigeria shouldn't be involved in a volatile situation as invasion because we can't win (look the the map of west Africa today). Instead of facing the truth, they'll turn around and whip baseless sentiments targeted at ibos. In fact, I'm very certain they can't hold this power for long, very bigoted set of people. The north was not any better BTW 2015 - 2022, but they kept it off social media.

Can you stop all this nonsense propaganda about coups? This was how stvpid DSS sounded about interim government and when the National Assembly ask them to arrest the perpetrators, they chickened out.

This propaganda is to stop the planned NLC proposed nationwide strike and nothing about any coup.

1.People are not really calling for coup. They are just angry with the government because to be frank, the government has messed up badly. So badly that we don't know what to do

Even this fuel subsidy removal....the only thing that keeps me supporting it is the fact that our debt does not allow us to keep subsidy. And then the possiblity of investment in domestic refining...and jobs.Otherwise, I would be protesting all the time by now

2.Good post, anyway. I like this part..

...

Effing effing true.

Check out Gowon's cabinet...a lot of first republic geng were in it. Awo was even a major player in that cabinet. Even Buhari that jailed more than just 3-4 guys, when you think about it, he needed the same people in 1984 who in 1982 were helping the big men and women to loot us dry back then.

At the end, the corrupt would come back, and would just simply hail the army boys, and we would be back to square one. Like in 1983, we removed the civillians. People like Abacha, IBB and co were just humble soja. By the year 1998...they were all filthily rich, and Nigeria was still poor.

A big problem is Nigerians don't realize that democracy requires participation to work. It's not our fault, before whitey came, we never had democracy in the traditional sense...it was for the most part one big man telling us and feeding us. In a few places like Igboland they had somehting akin to democracy, and at the village level in many parts consensus was the way for some decisions, but most of the time, leaderships were viewed as one big nanny. We are still getting used to the idea of democracy.

To be honest, I just hope they do not organise coup. As much as I have never liked any of our civillian governments since 1999...at least, I have spent the last nearly 2 decades of my life seeing soldiers where they should be...in the barracks, and the barracks alone. Not everywhere at once. And for once , I can speak freely and call this current APC govnerment and TInubu names...and no effing SSS would come and jail me...like they did one pastor in 1988 who wrote an article criticising the government in a christian magazine...and got invited by the SSS. (Yeah, we have people like MNK in jail, but at least we know where he is. Army rule? NMK won't even be allowed to see his lawyers, talkless of his doctor.

Maybe not in public, but if you spent the last few days on this site, you would see a lot of Nairalanders calling for coup...regardless of tribe.

I've spent some time debating these people. Honestly, many of them are naive.

But at the end, we don't want to go back to the days when they would jail you, and then pass a decree and backdate it to before you got jailed..lol.

Back in 1966, your grandad said the same thing when the army came into power. By 1974, he was probably crying when Gowon said that Nigeria is not ready for civilian rule. And people were still poor.

Back in 1983, your dad was angry and tired about the whole Shagari jamboree government, and people branding expensive wine with their name. By 1995, he was probably wondering what we had gotten into.

We have tried army rule twice , several times over. And Nigeria got poorer and poorer and poorer. When the Army took over in 1966, we were exporting a lot of stuff...even by 1970, oil was just 26% of our earnings. By the time they left permanently in 1999, not only had we lost all our export powers in other stuff, oil was now 97% of our earnings, we were no longer exporting anything else, and we were broke.

And you think army rule would change it again? No be the same army that is made up of Nigerians? People like you and me? Army that engages in brutalizing civillians for nothing?

Army rule never improved any African nation. Am serious.

Well, that would be very myopic of them. Who celebrates a coup? BAT should simply use diplomacy because we have so much to lose economically and security-wise. BF, Mali and Co are still under military rule till now. What do you think PMB did? He understood the limits of his powers. Keep your region safe (very important). Accept that changes are a part of life. World politics is changing and some nations will be pawns. There's more to what's going on in the region than ECOWAS realize. That's my submission.

@ your last paragraph. It's nigh impossible for a coup happen in Nigeria cos of the split in command structure of the military. Any coup plan would have leaked before the planning reach anywhere.
