The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited says it has partnered with NIPCO Gas Limited to construct 35 compressed natural gas (CNG) stations across the country.

CNG is a fuel that can be used in place of petrol, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). It is used in traditional petrol/internal combustion engine automobiles or specifically manufactured vehicles.

Garba Deen Muhammad, NNPC’s spokesperson, in a statement on Thursday, said the partnership aims to provide cheaper alternative fuel to motorists in Nigeria in compliance with President Bola Tinubu’s directive.

“As part of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited’s commitment to providing cheaper alternative fuel to motorists, the company is happy to announce a strategic partnership with NIPCO Gas Limited to deploy compressed natural gas (CNG) stations across the country,” the statement reads.

“This landmark collaboration aims to expand our CNG infrastructure, improve access to CNG, and accelerate the adoption of cheaper and cleaner alternative fuel for buses, cars, and Keke NAPEP, which will significantly reduce the cost of transportation and engender sustainable national economic growth.”

Muhammad said under the NNPC-NIPCO strategic partnership, 35 state-of-the-art CNG stations will be constructed nationwide, including three mother stations.

The NNPC spokesperson said the project would be rolled out in phases.

“Once fully operational, the stations can service over 200,000 vehicles daily, thereby significantly reducing the cost of automobile fuel for Nigerians and the cost of transportation,” he said.

“The first phase, comprising 21 CNG stations, will support intra-city transportation and be ready by the first quarter of 2024; while the second phase, comprising 35 CNG stations, will support inter-city transformation and will be ready by late 2024. This will be further complemented by an additional 56 stations to be deployed by NNPC Retail across the country.

“This initiative will leverage Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources to bring multiple benefits to Nigerians, including access to cheaper fuel, reduced cost of transportation, reduced carbon emissions, create new business value chains and streams of job opportunities.”

According to the statement, NIPCO Gas Limited is currently operating 14 CNG stations across Nigeria and has converted over 7,000 vehicles to run on CNG.

The national oil firm added that NIPCO’s technical competency and field experience will bolster the initiative’s success and amplify its positive impact on the nation’s economy.

On Tuesday, in a nationwide broadcast, President Tinubu said his administration has made provision to invest N100 billion between now and March 2024 to acquire 3,000 units of 20-seater buses powered by compressed natural gas (CNG).

Good move there.

However, it still beats my imagination how some of our politicians think. The idea to halt fuel subsidy was mulled over as far back as November 2022.
When the last administration forwarded the 2023 Budget to the National Assembly for passage, our legislators saw that no provision was made for subsidy beyond May 2023 but they never queried the executive what necessary measures were put in place to cushion the effect.
Governance is continuous, you think of the aftermath of your policies even when you are out of government.
At this stage, it's clear to everyone that fuel subsidy removal was long overdue, but how will the executive handle the situation with respect to the welfare of the masses?
God bless Nigeria.

This CNG should be for buses, cars, keke napes and motorcycles only. Not for Trucks.

Considering how many trucks on our high ways look deplorable and rickety, gas is highly inflammable than petrol so those trucks which are prone to falling in high ways should never be gas powered please.

Let trucks remain petrol powered while buses cars keke and motorcycles can run on gas.

It’ll surely make the cost of truck transport more expensive though.

I think govt should improve policies that will reduce truck falling on highway or assign a lane for them then maybe we can consider it.

Why were these policies and modalities not set into motion by Buhari since 2021 so that by 2022 or early 2023, we will be reliant on CNG then fuel subsidy can be removed.

Why commencing this policy that as they said will be completed early next year ? Why put the cart in front of the horse instead of horse in front of cart? This thing should had been done and concluded before subsidy was removed.

Our misleaders like to suffer us. This is how they came about with new currency and cashless policy that they made no provisions for.

This is commendable but damnly late.

Unnecessary sufferings will be created.

I have learnt not to applaud these policies, until I see them translate into improved Standard of Living for the average Nigerian. 👋

Putting the horse before the cart. These are things that should have been in place before the subsidy removal. But Tinubu hurridely removed subsidy without presenting immediately policies to cushion the effect on the economy.

The first thing he could reason was to share #8000 to his confused followers.

Olodo, he shouid have put CNG buses and gas stations in place before removing subsidy?.. abeg who curse una with poor brain?. This projects is long term and subsidy money is being used to make it happen. Do you want him to keep paying those subsidy thieves for like minimum of 8months?. If he keeps paying those thieves, they'd sabotage this gas project like they sabotaged the refineries.

Stop insulting.
He was saying that APC government, under Buhari ought to have made provisions that will ameliorate subsidy removal.
Since they were away that subsidy will not be sustained beyond June 2023, they suppose to have started construction of CNG gas stations as early as 2nd quarter of 2022. If they had done this, the resultant effect of subsidy removal would have been minimal.
Where finance is an impeding factor, it can as well be outsource, just as they sourced externally, $800m conditional cash transfer.
The earlier we tell truth to power, the better our country.

Idiot, those are some of the infrastructures he should have put in place before removal of subsidy.

Yes the CNG gas stations should have commenced long before now.

These things are private investments, you cannot convince a business man to put his money into a venture that is not profitable by just "promise". As long as subsidy payments remained nobody would take that risk knowing fully well that government may backtrack on their promises. imagine having to build CNG stations all over the place and government out of pressure from the masses decides to keep on subsidizing.. Na who go lose?

Do you think these are projects that materialize in 2/3 months?, we borrow to pay subsidy, if subsidy is not removed, would these projects have been financed?, where would the money come from?. You want the President to pay those subsidy thieves another $10billion before these projects is finally delivered?. You dey bend your head for Obi to piss on your brain, na why una no dey think.
