Francophones Speak Good French But Nigerians Barely Speak English by Afam4eva(m): 5:12am On Oct 11, 2011
Let me use footballers as an example. How come footballers from countries like Ivory coast, senegal, Mali etc even though most are not educated speak very good french but their Nigeria peers of the same educational status murder the English language like they murder christmas chicken. You have to be really educated to be able to speak good quality English in Nigeria. Why is it so in Nigeria and not in Francophone countries.

Btw, I'm not an English language advocate. I'm just dead curious.

Do you understand French? They don't speak as proper as you would think lol. The French they speak is quite elementary and they tend to stutter as much as our footballers do, or any footballers for that matter as they're not the brightest bunch. It's the same with other Francophone entertainers.

"Comment tu t'appelles" is the proper way of asking "what's your name?" I've heard butchered questions such as "c'est quoi ton nom" which is literally translated to "it is what your name?" My French professor used to cringe at some of the French I'd hear from Francophone Africans lol, but it's the younger generation's French.

I guess it's because I don't understand french. They always look very confident when they're speaking the language.

I also noticed that rural people from francophone countries speak french unlike their Nigerian counterpart. I may be wrong.
Re: Francophones Speak Good French But Nigerians Barely Speak English by Nobody: 5:32am On Oct 12, 2011
Yeah. If you didn't understand English, you'd think some of our footballers are confident too lol.

I've noticed the same about rural francophone countries. With the exception of Congo. I have Congolese in-laws and they speak Lingala often.

@OP,You are so wrong on both counts.

Francophone footballlers(some) don't speak good French same for your rural dwellers analogy. They speak native languages like "Jula,Ewe" etc

Thats not true! Ther french is not so fluent nd they often mix it with thier native language, like the comgolese, they mix french nd lingala together,im preety sure their colonial masters in france wont undastand them,

The fact of the matter is that we should really be speaking African languages. All of the thousand languages of Africa should be made official. Sadly we see too much emphasis put on colonial languages such as English, French and Portuguese. I am tired of all these Uncle Toms and sell-outs who insist on speaking European languages to their children because they think that their children will fail in life if they speak African languages.
Re: Francophones Speak Good French But Nigerians Barely Speak English by Nobody: 3:53pm On Oct 18, 2011
They won't make it far if the only language they speak is an African language.

@ OP

Nearly every person makes mistakes while speaking a non native language Africabs and Europeans included. For example look at Didier Drogba or Solomon Kalou: the type of French they speak is very different from French French. I Met someone from Burkina Faso once who spoke French and I observed that her French is almost like French-Pidgin.

Also even the title of this topic has grammatical errors such as "Speak good French" instead of "Speak French well". I'm sure you'd even find an error or two in this post that I made. Goes to show you that everyone makes mistakes.
Re: Francophones Speak Good French But Nigerians Barely Speak English by BlackLibya: 11:11pm On Oct 19, 2011
Whether or not they speak french perfectly is beyond the point. The point is they all speak French, and use it as a source of pride amongst each other. Whereas British colonies like Nigeria, Uganda, and Kenya use the local languages to a large extent, and most from these countries do not even speak english beyond what anyone else in the world would speak.

The real reason for this is the French goal of "assimilation". French colonial campaigns were on average much more destructive and insulting than British campaigns. While the British often tried to work within the existing framework, the French destroyed all previous forms of govt and forced locals to accept french superiority.

The locals that were more drawn to French were given positions of power, and if you note all the French African leaders at independence had studied in Paris, and had a grand appreciation of French culture. Houphet-Boigney even said that his nation did not need independence, because they were forming a brotherhood with the French. So there you go, that is why, the French policy resulted in countries that felt France was much superior to them, and the end all be all. Girls from French West/Central Africa often dress in french styles and imitate strive for french accents, they have a stronger obsession with white people than other africans.

I don't think that saying "Speak good French" is grammatically incorrect.

"Speak good French" and "Speak French well" mean two different things, though.

"Good French" refers to the type of French being spoken.

"Speak French well" refers to the ability of the speaker to speak French.

that's not bad french lol. There is 3type of language (I don't know them in English)
*language familier.
*language courant
*language soutenu

Asking c'est quoi ton nom is good .
Just like how you doing? Instead of how are you or how are you doing.
They are all good English. undecided

"C'est quoi ton nom?" sounds fine to me (even though im not that good at french). The simple problem is that the French way of asking a question can translate very badly into English...

If you translated what some European french people said directly to English it would sound much worse than that.

Seriously.

"comment tu t'appelles" doesnt even mean "what is your name" its means "what are you called." So infact the African way of saying it is a better English translation

maybe, hate is a strong word, in fact you said you dislike, I think it was about Nigeria adopting French as second official language and making it mandatory, and u were replying to a certain Andre Uweh.
Anyway good to know you don't hate us for something we didn't choose.

maybe it was when a state in Nigeria wanted to adopt french as a second language aafter English. I opposed it, as i see no reason why we should not promote our indigenous languages instead of European languages. I want to believe you have a native language where you come from in Cameroon.

we do ..the thread was about strengthening your relationship with your neighbors. I'm for promoting African language I speak mine and I don't mind learning another.but truth b told if today on this forum you can talk with Yoruba, Edo, Hausa, Fulani It's because you know English. I don't one will have the time to learn 250 languages and dialects except if you are majoring in African languages.
My point is despite our efforts some African languages will disapear , some ethnic group are just too small to keep their language alive, it happened in Europe/Western-world
