Malian Troops Heading To Niger Ambushed By Terrorist Heavy Casualties Reported by greatness77: 3:39pm On Aug 04, 2023
A Malian military source said Islamic State jihadists ambushed army units near the northeastern town of Menaka on Thursday. “We are currently working out the toll… Our troops defended themselves fiercely,” the source said.

A police official confirmed the report, adding that the soldiers “were escorting trucks to Niger”. “The toll is heavy,” a local official told AFP. No details about the trucks were immediately available.

Neighbouring Niger is also battling a jihadist insurgency and is in a standoff with regional neighbours following a coup last week.

WILL ECOWAS INTERVENE?

Junta-ruled Mali and Burkina Faso have backed Niger’s new military leaders, saying an intervention by regional bloc ECOWAS to restore deposed President Mohamed Bazoum would be tantamount to a declaration of war on them.

The jihadist violence in Mali spilt over into Niger and Burkina Faso in 2015, fuelling anger at the civilian governments that ended in military takeovers in all three nations since 2020.

I believe that this has the handwriting of USA/CIA+ France both of this nations have economic interests in Niger and would not want it to go like that, if not why will insurgents know about troop movements and whereabouts
This attack will give time to the Nigerian troops to attack and dislodge the coupist
Anyways interesting days ahead
North will be the battle ground

Nigeria will not fight a war. Nigeria will sack the coupists and restore the legitimate power. By that, we don't need to face the ISIL group which the legitimate Nigerien govt has kept abay. Mali is receiving serious beating in the hands of the ISIL group so Mali is not a problem. Niger is too close to us to be having coup plotters in power. The coup Leader will experience same reversal of gains Mali is witnessing today.

Crazy decision.
They keep forgetting that depleting their forces will expose them to attacks from Islamic militants😭

And how exactly do you intend to sack the coupists without getting into a war when they are the ones in govt presently.
You must be naive to rejoice over the terrorist attack on Mali soldiers. Do you think ISIL will fight on the side of Nigeria against those countries that have 96% Muslim population? Nigeria will be viewed as a worse enemy by the terrorists who will recruit and activate more cells in Nigeria.
A word is enough for the wise.

If need be, Nigeria will go to war. Many of you are just too emotional about this. Do you think folding hands and watching is the best?
How some of you think Russia has right to wage war against Ukraine over the laters decision to join NATO but think Nigeria has no right or reason to wage war against Niger over military coup still baffles me. If ECOWAS consider the coup as having negative influence, either direct or indirect on her democracy, it will have no choice than to engage Niger republic and Nigeria as the head will lead that engagement.

You are obviously too young and do not know these things. When Nigeria takes away sitting military heads, we don't fight war. Nigeria will not fight war with Niger. It is not going to happen. The coupists will break ranks even before and during the operation.

I laugh at the foolish Mali Junta.
You have one of the poorest country in Africa.
You have about 3 Jihadist groups and 4 rebel groups holding sway in more than 50% of your country.
Yet, you are sending soldiers to Niger who will be defeated within hours.

Any Malian troop who try to block Ecowas army's advance won't return home.

Which sitting military heads have you ever removed?
Stop all this empty childish bragging abeg.
You think all these hollow bragging is what will make any difference in the state of affairs?
The important thing is to de-escalate tensions and look for a diplomatic solution. Nigeria will not gain anything from open conflict from France and US trained Niger backed by Russia. I still wonder why Buhari was not drafted to negotiate. He's popular there. Something is amiss.
