Russia has no plans to use its military in Niger, a top diplomat said Wednesday, countering widely held views on social media that Russia would side militarily with the coup plotters in the West African country.

“Russia opposes a military solution to the conflict, Russia has no plans to use its armed forces in Niger”, Russia’s Ambassador to Nigeria Alexei Shebarshin said in a comment the embassy shared with PREMIUM TIMES.

There have been claims that Russia will support Niger militarily should ECOWAS make true its threat to use force to reinstate the democratically elected government there.

The rumours were fuelled by statements of the coup plotters and similar coup plotters in other West African countries that they were jettisoning Western support for Russian support.

Also, scores of Nigeriens who marched in support of the coup burnt French flags and raised Russian flags, creating an impression Russia was behind the coup plotters.

In his statement, Mr Shebarshin advised Niger to solve its problems independently and constitutionally, without any resort to force or threat to use it.

International politics is all about INTEREST, it goes beyond display of strength, emotions and morals.

Majority of African countries have strong ties with Russia. Once African Union and ECOWAS oppose the coups and decide to take serious steps, Russia has no option than to back off BECAUSE Russia has a lot more to gain from cooperation with African Union and ECOWAS than those military juntas in the four countries

You make a lot of sense. Well, I reckon we'll just have to sit back and watch as events unfold.

O pari. The coupists lule pii! They are now under the bus. ISIL is cancelling Mali and today killed a lot of Mali soldiers heading to Niger while Russia just told them diplomatically that they are not supporting the coupists. They have lost support of France, Nigeria, US and the nations that give them indirect access to the sea. Nigeria has switched off electricity, Ecowas has blocked their banking channels and no plane can fly over them from the South. Niger coupists are on OYO. Without firing one bullet, they just got humiliated.

Like I stated earlier, Nigeria can not fight a war with Niger, we are brothers but can we chase out the coupists? Yes we can. Russia will rather have Nigeria as an ally than Niger which is mostly dry land and the poorest of the poor nations on earth by HDI.

That was how someone keep arguing blindly with me in another thread. Who lose her major flour market because of barren landlock country like Niger.

It is high time we start educating people about the power Nigeria wield with her population and economic influence in the continent and accross the globe. No super power can shun or ignore Nigeria interest in Africa.

Nigeria should not waste our scarce resources in fighting war in Niger, we have many pressure issues that needed to be focus on. Robust economic sanction and sponsoring of another coup from within are more than enough to solve this problem. And by the end of this month, the junta won't have choice but to hand over to interim government or be booted out by another sponsored military coup that will immediately reinstall civilian rule.

Tinubu must leave Niger republic alone. We don’t want war in Northern Nigeria. Northern Nigeria has suffered enough, we don’t want anymore crisis. Take your war to South West and fight it there. How stupid can people be for crying out loud.

Nigeria has a lot to gain from attacking Niger coup miscreants. Coup in five countries within three years shows that they influence militaries from other countries to remove their leaders. If care is not taken, it will happen in Nigeria two. The coup is like a movement to overthrow all west African leaders and beyond.

Anyhow it goes, Niger are ungrateful people and should be left alone to suffer small a swear

Of course. When Russia is not stupid. Russia won't sacrifice it's relationship with the African continent because of rogue nations (Mali, Burkina and Niger).

Reason why Russia invades Ukraine is the same reason why Nigerian wants to intervene militarily

Niger coup is capable of encouraging mutiny in Nigeria after it has obviously happened in five west African countries, Nigeria is not save.

Nigeria is also presently one of the largest importer of refine Crude from Russia. I wander why biafrans think Russia will choose Niger republic over Nigeria.

Nigeria will not send soldiers to Niger to do the bidding of the french, unless our government is stupid.
France have been looking for an inroad into Aso Villa and Macron has finally gotten it with his fake romance with Tinubu. It is a shame that while small countries are trying to liberate themselves from france, almighty Nigeria is getting herself under the servitude if France.
You can keep deceiving yourselves that Tinubu is fighting the coup to prevent similar occurrence in Nigeria. Anyone who knows will tell you that there can never be a military coup in Nigeria again with the way our military is structured.

How does he even want to fight the people of Niger, the military of Mali and Burkina Faso, and then Algeria and Libya

90% of the people support the coupists.
If the people unite and take arms against any invaders, do you think Northern Nigeria that is all about greed will stand?
Stop being sentimental. We pray the whole saga is dialogued towards peace. But Bazoum coming back is not even safe for his existence. His time is over except he has a death wish.

Ok calm down, examine this.
Nigerian army invades Niger
Nigerian army starts dying en-masse in Niger. This is widely expected because 80% of the people are pro-Military Junta.
While that is going on, they are getting killed by IPOB, Boko Haram. Fighting a war in 3 different theatres.
With Tinubu's unpopular regime, that will lead to a coup in Nigeria.

This is a diplomatic statement. They are taking the position ECOWAS should have taken. However, if they are formally called to assist the country by Nigerien authority, their position will change.
