Where democracy works, leadership/government sits down with industry and exchanges ideas on how to raise productivity, how to develop the sector and how to ensure sustainability. But in these parts it is individuals and interest groups often completely detached from these struggling industries and sectors that determine what, how and who gets relief. The products as we have seen over many years and regimes and highlighted by the past government is the huge losses to the state of resources on phantom projects, phony interventions and corruption riddled handouts. But with a citizenry that does not demand accountability the nation has been condemned to repeat its errors. And here we are. The Buhari era failed type of incentives/palliatives over again. So instead of giving out cash or kind that will certainly be mismanaged, diverted or stolen, a better idea will be for government to use whatever resource it has to seed the establishment of an enterprise(s) that will see to the mechanization of agricultural production and make farmers and cooperatives shareholders. The enterprise can then buy agricultural machinery to increase output of farmers and build food processing and storage facilities which subscribers can hire. The problem with the economy is inflation. It is not a lack of capital. Farmers like other producers are not saying they have NO money. So handouts is not the basic solution to their problem. The problem we all have is the CAPACITY to produce caused by inflation. People are no longer able to produce enough to remain in business. So the 'palliatives' should be administered to raising productivity and in all 'bricks and mortar' sectors which includes agriculture this means mechanization. Trigger enterprises that mechanize agriculture and make farmers shareholders in this enterprise and that is all the sector needs to succeed. |
