St Finbarr's College, although used be a good school but still doesn't make the cut when you consider schools established pre - 1945.

We should be looking at schools with great academic tradition with a lot of history to boot.

If we agree with the 10 above, we can start talking about their current academic standards.
Agree Ke? It is surprising no one has mentioned Ibadan Grammar School (est. 31st  March, 1913).
Re: The Ten Oldest Secondary Schools In Nigeria? by tpia5: 1:32pm On Oct 12, 2011
maybe the thread should list the oldest secondary school in each state, and limit the number of states to the 1978 number.

12 or so.

Can we have the mottos adopted by these schools as an expression of their guiding principles, including their meanings since most these are written in Latin.

Examples are:  Kings College-    Floreat
Ijebu-Ode Grammar School-  Non nobis Domine

Someone just mentioned Government Secondary School, Owerri - founded in 1935. That's my almamata. It was originally a primary school from 1905 until 1935.

Unfortunately, the (academic and moral) standards we met (and left) in that school (in the 90s) appear to have been eroded. I wonder what they are teaching those kids there now.

Yeah, my Secondary School is on the list- Ijebu-Ode Grammar School. It was founded in 1913 by the Christ Missionary Society ( CMS ). It was originally named CMS Grammar School, Ijebu-ode, Ogun State. Along the way, The Anglican Communion took over and it assumed its present name. Ijebu-ode Grammar School is part of the AIONIAN Schools alongside Abeokuta Grammar School, Ibadan Grammar School, Remo Secondary School and Egbado College. Fela Anikulapo's father ( Reverend Kuti ) was one of the early Principals of the School. I am not happy about the dilapidated state of the School in the last 20 years. Things have even gotten worse in the last 6 years. I was a member of Odumosu House during my days there. Cheers.
