The french soldiers were there to push back jihadists. After France was pushed out of Mali, Half of Mali has now been taken over by Jihadists. Military contractors (Wagner) alone can't hold the jihadists back and are overwhelmed. In Niger republic, the jihadists celebrated the exit of French forces after the coup.
